The Cramer family could have survived losing a major customer but they took a good look at the future of this business and shut it down.
I don't blame them. Trucking in California is getting more difficult every year and the Cramers just figured they didn't need the aggravation.
I see JB Hunt and various gyppos at Costco now.

I do recall it might've been one of the Cramers making trailer checks at the Aspen distribution facility. But yeah. As someone who's been out of CA for over a decade, I honestly don't know how any non-tech or non-consulting business thrives out there any more.

It's tough sometimes. Okay, its tough all the time. I was lucky enough to follow good advice and lock into something I could count on. I'm 78, I doubt if I''ll start changing the game plan now.
I came into this business when a strong work ethic and keeping your word on a handshake was about all you needed. Those days are gone forever. Most of the guys who did business like that are dead now.
I love where I live, I'm the fourth generation to own this land but, if I was a young guy starting out I'd look for someplace else. A young person just starting out, or trying to, won't have the same advantages that I had. And that's a shame.Deere hunter, Rugerfan, broke down plumber and 4 others Thank this. -
Wish I had that sort of guidance growing up. All I got was the typical "get good grades/go to college" sermon from my parents. But no real follow up or grooming for a future career choice. Nonetheless, I was trash at academics(blame poor brain development/too much chemicals/etc.,) and sort of came across trucking when talking to the old school drivers on their way out in early 00s. Hard to believe at 41, I'm now just trying to keep what I can alive of what the old heads taught me.
As far as future/alternative career prospects, those look kind of dim/uninteresting to me. Couldn't see myself going into an IT job. Too much young and full of brightness for me. Maybe find a nice little spread out here on the TX Panhandle or somewhere in Kansas and do goat farming

Goat farming doesn't sound like a bad idea at all. If things get tight financially you can always eat a goat. Pretty hard to eat a truck tire.Deere hunter and bentstrider83 Thank this.

Not a baaaaaaaaaaaad idea lolol cashmere goats , high dollar wool and comfortable, might make a dollar . They'll turn their nose up at alfalfa for a dam thistle fairly eazy to feed.bentstrider83 Thanks this.

Company I used to work , Triple Crown Service , with had all their eggs in one basket
they had 14 terminals .
And the vast majority of what they hauled was parts from suppliers to auto assembly plants
Triple crown now has 2 terminals still openbentstrider83 Thanks this. -
I heard they were shutting down their "RoadRailer" service with Norfolk Southern as well. One of the last operations using that trailer on rail trucks operation.
-
Then that means they are closing the last two terminals
One in Detroit and one in Kansas
I thought the roadrailers were a great idea
I have no idea why it just didn’t catch on
the owner operators leased to triple crown delivered and picked up kids in a 200 mile radius of the terminal and they moved em long distance on the trainLast edited: Aug 27, 2024
