So I am located in Iowa, I do all my own maintenance fixing things and what not.
Now I read and different places you can do you annual inspection under certain rules.
Iowa says refer to FMCSA. I own the one truck, have my own authority, not leased to any one.
I read you have to certify your self as a mechanic or something.
Question is how and where do I get the inspection sticker? How do I self certify?
Iowa lets you print off the sheet type (now I can not find it) but no idea about the sticker. The sheet just has a signature spot no ID numbers or anything.

The sticker is not required if you carry a copy of the inspection form itself. But if you really want a form and sticker, JJ keller makes one (you can buy it from most Petro/TA's -- sometimes have to ask at the shop though).

As for inspector qualifications, here is the code: http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/title49/section/396.19

For my file, I just keep transcripts from auto shop classes (total over 1 year training) along with a generic certificate I printed up saying that I completed a CMV inspection training course put on by my company.

Yea there was a web site I saw you can do some type of training for it. I am mostly self tough. Everything I know is from my dad who is a machine (worked on semis, trains, cars, small gas engines, everything but planes). What ever I learned while I was in the army, repair books, screwing around, all types of stuff. Shot I rebuilt a whole car engine, a transmission, then ditched the auto trans and put a manual and converted electrical and mechanical stuff to do it.
I learned more from them things then I ever did on other classes.

I noticed it said Have a combination of training or experience totaling at least 1 year. Such training or experience may consist of:
I think maybe I could use the 6 years in the Army always doing my inspections on my cranes and semis I drove?

you can download the annual inspection form from the FMCSA website and do it your self,,I have done it for years,, you do not need a sticker on the truck but must carry a copy of the annual inspection form in the truck

Nothing supper shady. I just bought this truck (its a drywall delivery truck). I been replacing and fixing a lot of stuff on the truck. Needless to say they did not fix things, care, know what they was doing. I had to replace a $300 hydraulic line lucky me I got it on line or $85 shipped made to order so I replaced a bunch others, make the lines the right size old owner went from 3/4 in to 1/4 in house and fitting), welded two crack in the boom, replace brake lines brake chamber, stop a air leaks coming from the AC controls, stop hydraulic leaks (they just let leak badly and pour $80 worth of hydraulic oil every week), fix slack adjusted (some was not even touching the drum at full stroke) made a grill, fixed a huge oil leak (more like fountain) on the engine a flange on the fuel pump missing bolts, fixed door locks (the door would not stay shut)

I have to do some body work from prior accidents and weld some metal over the rust hole part of the floor board. Oil changes, get weather striping for the door, A hole list of other issues.

The three biggest issues I need to fix is the head lights they work but suck (I don't deliver in bad weather or dark anyways) and the back brakes. They are at its limit or close to it. Then the tags brakes spring missing no oil in the bath. Its very clean looked like it was rebuilt wrong or never ever (don't matter cant use them anyways pressure adjuster is broke).

I am out of money for repair just have fuel money for the next week or so until I get my first loads in and paid. So within 30 day I can have all that replaced.

I don't see the stickers often on otr trucks (unless I am blind lol). I see them on a few local trucks around here that all went to the same place to get them done.

When I was at the DOT office I asked about this and one lady asked if I was mechanic. I said how do you judge that she just said you have to be a certified one. She knew nothing about really. She made it seem I had to go to school for it, pass a test and be hired as one. The only thing I thought was how do people work on their own stuff. Its not the aviation world yet.

I just downloaded the samples pdfs from jjkeller of the forms and use a photo editing software to remove the 'sample' across it or you could just type up a new form in an office application copying the format and words of the sample.

You just basically sign your name and say you have experience. Just a matter of paperwork. For a sticker you copy jjkeller sample and just put a wide strip of packing tape over it.

I am just sick of filthy shops and know nothing mechanics and having to pay for it. They can't even measure tread depth right anyway.
