Depending on snow/ice conditions sometimes only chaining your outside 4 will get you in trouble. It was always 3 railers on the back axle for me, so naturally I don’t agree with your statement.

They finally reopened I 70 at 7:45 pm, it was closed at 1:20 am. All, or many of the trucks between Copper Mtn. and Vail summit were turned back to Denver or told to take an alternate route, which the there were none. Co 91 was closed, US 50 was closed, the only option was to take Hwy 9 up to US 40, over Rabbit Ears then on over to Craig and back down Hwy 13, roughly 4 hours. One of our O/O's left Denver at 3 am heading to Grand Junction, he knew the Hwy was closed but left anyhow, sat on Vail for 4 hours before they turned him back.
There were so many eastbound trucks parked at Dotsero, or points west, they would only release 20 trucks, every 20 minutes until the backup thinned out. I was told it took 5 hours to ease the backups both directions because of all the trucks. Supposedly there were over 200 food deliveries made to truckers stranded on WB 70.otterinthewater, Tug Toy and Farmerbob1 Thank this. -
I think them thar thangs are pretty expensive.

About $100 for 2 depending on where you buy them, but, they will shred themselves pretty quickly if you're not on snow/ice, Western Dist. offers them to their drivers, few years back, one told me that on dry pavement, you're limited to 5 mph or they will start to fall apart.Farmerbob1 and Dave_in_AZ Thank this.

so I am wondering, does anyone put WD-40 on the chains, to help keep them from rusting? Or do they not really last long enough for the rust to be an issue of breakage?
