    I've got 2 3/8 chains and the rest 1/2.

After using only 1/2" chain for 2.5 years, I have to be careful with my 3/8, don't wanna hurt myself.

I like chain at least a half inch. Anything smaller? Hah.

Remember, I throw everything on the coil or whatever it is being secured. I don't care if 4 chain meets the working strain strength capacity, I'll pile 10 on there. My deck loads have one philosophy. If God can pick the deck and flip it upside down in his hand the coil should stay put.

I recall a steel mill man telling me the big 250 ton cranes need a full set of new chain every few months. They go through em too fast. But for them. It's cheap.

Show us some pics of ten 1/2" chains on a coil. That would be cool to see

1/2" is wasted money on a flatbed or stepdeck. All it will do is rip the trailer apart instead of breaking the chain.

Id also like to see the truck they load with that 500k pound capacity overhead crane.

Edit to add: also wouldn't mind seeing the coil that crane is designed to pick up. Half a million pound coil would be interesting.

It was company chain. And there were times we haul a 52000 belly on a ravens covered wagon with that big chain. Took 20 of them through the eye and 12 straps over the top. The Ravens had the same chain strength on it's smaller tie down spots every foot or so on the edges of the deck. Pull up a small metal disk and find 3 links of half inch chain to hook to. He he he.

I wished I took some of those photos. The only photos I ever took was a fat ship that dumped hundreds of coils next to it for import down Biloxi way I think it was. I thought well ####, why are we making coils here in USA when we are gobbling them up cheap from over the ocean?

Cnsper - I agree. I like the idea of 1/2" chains, but, what use are they if the attachment points can't fully support what the chains will. I will say I have used them on the back side of a large LOX Tank. I didn't want the tank coming into the cab, so I used the chains at the back side of the load. I had 10 3/8" chains on a 40K load and the 2 1/2" chains at the rear. Way overkill, but, Hey, it made me feel like the load wasn't going to come forward and kill me. I tied it off around 2 spools each. Lol..
