Okay, but how much do your chains really weigh?

Super Bowl weekend 2008. I was the first truck out of here when they got 12 opened up enough to get the trucks out, then I think it was closed for almost 2 weeks because of the avalanches. It’s was pretty trippy having a single lane plowed from where we were all the way to the top of Lolo.

Speaking of chains, I guess I had better get off my lazy butt and go see if I can extract our job trailer from the job we just finished. Frozen and not much snow, but it was soft when it was parked there a month ago and the tires are sunk in bit. I might back under it at a pretty good angle.

I loaded at Grangeville and had to wait for them to dig through a drift out east of town so I could come down 13. Then once I headed up 12 I noticed that I hadn’t seen any vehicles or plows heading the other direction. That’s a pretty sinking feeling when you’re in the middle of nowhere. The good thing is that after this incident they put up the gates to close the road when there’s high avalanche danger. Lol.

Honestly the chain/no chain debate really comes down to 4 primary camps.

    1. The not going to do it because of libaility or risk from morons who cant be trusted to keep the truck in a streight line on a bright summer day on the ohio turnpike god forbid in snowy conditions crowd

    2. The "its part of the job" crowd who will throw chains whenever needed. Because the load gots to move.

    3. The "will throw chains if i get caught" crowd who will park a truck if chains are required but if they get caught will still throw them just to get where ever they are going.

    4. The <insert uninteligible giberish posibly in a diffrent language, posibly just from a brain dead moron here> crowd who never throw chains and even when they do, do it poorly and cause wrecks because dey ish big time twuck dwiver! <looking at you fedwrex and failazon>

3 of these camps are entirely valid and for diffrent reasons. I tend to fall somewhere between 1 and 3. Ill chain if required but ill go out of my way to avoid needing it to be required. Aint worth the lability.

If anyone has to ask what this is...you have a good job and a great rapport with your shop.
If you know what this is, and have used one late at night in a cold shop so you could work the next day, the coffee is on me brother.
Coffee and pie if that tool is worn out and you smash at least one finger or two knuckles.
