I’ve read 393.120 front back and inside out...I’ve always used chains on coils, but where in the reg does is mandate chain use?

I think it’s more a matter of the strength of your securement being more than the weight of the load.

    Aamcotrans and D.Tibbitt Thank this.

You will find that the regulations do not specify securement devices.

    D.Tibbitt Thanks this.

It was written before straps were invented. All you had were chains or rope back than. Common sense told you to use chains. Lol!

I could see using them if u have a bunch of little coils... but one big one or 2 big ones. I would not bet my life on straps.

Some materials can not have chain on them. Used to load coils of a certain type of stainless. Was very thin, put a chain on it, you will damage it. 3 straps.

    D.Tibbitt and jamespmack Thank this.

Yes, however alot of facilities will not let you leave unless its chained.

Without giving info out. One will not allow you to move till chained, and chains only.
