I was up on 26 on Mt Hood last week playing in the snow with the wife and kids. I noticed a lot of trucks driving by with chains on the rear axle of the trailer. I was under the impression reading the Oregon chain laws that the chains need to be on the forward axle of the trailer. Is this correct or is it just what the driver prefers?

Washington State is slightly different, they require just one drag chain on the trailer.

California is similiar to Oregon but the choice of axles is not clearly stated, you can run on either axle, but is stated in the text and not on the diagram.

ronrdrcr Thanks this. -
I generally stagger the chains on differant axles on the trailer. One side the front, the other the rear.
