gi bill is paid directly to the vet not to any company. can only pay a portion of cdl school with it, so he still has most of it if he did pay part of school with it.
Chalk up TMC as a bad company.

GI is bill not paid to the vet, check your info (from an 11 year Marine vet). It's paid to the school to "simplify the process" aka the cut you out of what benefits you EARNED if you live in a state with reduced cost schooling for vets AKA Tx. You don't get the extra you paid into, the government just keeps it to give to welfare recipients or whatever other plague of society they feel the need to support.
Josh, sorry to hear about your luck brother. It's not a bad industry, you just have to find the right fit and quite frankly OTR wasn't it for me. I worked for 2 "good" companies OTR that were nothing they cracked up to be and then found some local work.
Look for a mom and pops company with 3 or 4 trucks who will give you a shot, I make double what I made OTR and I am home every night (although sometimes not for more than a few hours) and get "most" weekends off but if I do have to work a weekend, I am more than compensated for my "inconvenience" lol. It's not all bad, it just seems to get that way when you get more than say, 500 trucks and 600 employees.Faber Thanks this. -
For a really long time TMC was the place to be. I made over 60 grand a year with them, drove very nice well maintained washed weekly equipment, and had compliments coming out the wazoo which felt good, even though the truck wasn't mine TMC makes you accept responsibility for it as if it was, i liked them a lot as a company.
It's really gone to the crapper, if you check my posts i was on here almost weekly sticking up for them, and defending in accuracies in others posts regarding their so-called "unfair" treatment, and i'll be honest here, the only "unfair" treatment i ever endured with TMC was being fired for, essentially, no reason whatsoever.
I am actually going to re-apply. I don't want to drive for another company, i started there and wanted to retire from there. My only belief is that the account was being downsized and with the freight being so slow in Michigan where i live they were afraid of putting me back OTR due to the fact that it was getting harder, and harder to get guys home.
Going to wait until summer and reapply. Theres not much out there right now that I'm interested in, if i'm going to be stuck OTR it might as well be for a company that i like.
Don't know guys, best of luck if you're looking at going there. My advice would be to wait until early summer when freight starts picking up and hopefully they start crying for drivers again. Right now you're overly expendable and might be hurt in this process.
Best of luck to all of you on your venture, like i said TMC wasn't a bad company they always took #### good care of me, but with the rate that people are lining up to get jobs that makes retention mean very little, and now they're able to fire you for stupid reasons in hopes of cutting costs and whatnot. I hope it works out for you, sorry to hear about your GI bill, i really don't think that it was intentional on their part, but they don't want to hire you if they can't get you home, if they did, you'd likely quit anyway so it would be a waste of everyone's time. I wish you the best of luck on your venture, and hope that all works out for you in the end. -
eckz - you're saying that TMC has "gone to the crapper," yet you still want to work for them? and you say you got fired for "stupid reasons....essentially no reason whatsoever..." I thought you said they fired you for being late, 3 times for home depot deliveries, or some such.
a LOT of companies would fire a driver for this reason. last company I worked for had some Lowes dedicated positions. they flat told drivers in orientation that if they're late, they better be dead or broke down - and if broke down, they better let dispatch know ASAP. otherwise, a late Lowes load would result in immediate termination, on the FIRST offense, NOT the third. I don't know what Lowes/Home Depot is able to bill the trucking company for a late delivery, but it must be a lot, or otherwise they wouldn't be so strict about being late. so to say you were fired for "no reason" might not be all that truthful? -
I just called TMC, as i live in the state of Idaho, i asked if they hired from my state and was told definitely not, Guess i didnt want to go there anyway, Guess you have to find that right company.

If things go back the way that they were, yes i'd go back to them.
I was late due to HOS laws, the loads weren't being scheduled properly.
So yeah, stupid reasons imo. -
Just thought i would elaborate a bit more - was heading out when i added that quick response.
I don't recall saying that they fired me 'for' being late 3 times, although i did point out that i was late 3 times. Some were due to HoS, others to road conditions or waiting on accidents, etc. The point is that my dispatcher backed me up on every thing that they were complaining about. IE I was doing what i was supposed to do, and yet they still pushed the issue. Also, on this account there is a "6 hour window" so being late really isn't being late at all, the store would just 'preffer' you to be there at the time that it says on the bill. You keep talking about Lowes -- this was Home Depot. Just because they sell similar products doesn't mean there is any relevance here.
I also stated that a year or two ago even if you screwed up on a dedicated account REALLY BAD you were placed back over the road, and not fired. The reason i believe that this wasn't the case with me is due to the fact that Michigan is pretty crappy right now.
I'll also mention that i've yet to recieve any 'official' answer from human recources or anybody in dispatch as to why i was 'terminated', nor did the lady on the phone ever give me a 'real' reason for my termination. What it boiled down to is that i was having car trouble, and, although i still had hours and hours left to make my load apointment i still called my dispatcher 'just to be safe'.. He changed the load and gave it to another driver 'just to be safe' and this new person Denise or whatever called him wanting to know why the load got changed to another driver. At that point his answer was 'car trouble'.. And my only guess was that what she heard when he said that was 'unreliable' apparently she missed the part where my car was fixed and i still would've delivered the load 4 hours earlier than it actually needed to be there.
Yes, it went to the crapper. Even before i came off the road i was sitting for a day or two at a time (This was with a trainee i might mention). They were really getting down on everyone for the stupidest things, in fact i was about to quit and take a job at a driving school before they called me and asked me to go on the home depot account, so at that point it was pretty bad. I think i was only bringing home about 700 a week with a trainee in the truck, which for me was unheard of. So, if things went back to the way that they were before freight got all messed up and they decided to start getting weird about stuff, yes i would gladly drive for them again and i am not blaming them for the lack of freight either, like other drivers would.. Because i know that a company is out to make money and us sitting there empty certainly isn't doing that. So obviously if they had some freight i would have been running it.
Why do you insist on going over peoples posts with a fine tooth negative cob all the time? Do you even drive a truck anymore? Just curious. Don't think i've ever seen a positive remark from you on here. And you keep talking about who you "used" to drive for. -
Freight is crappy and companies must cut back on drivers. You got caught up in it somehow and your name got put into the hat and were chosen.
Hate to see TMC on the negative, I would blame the economy more than TMC.
-Does make you wonder if TMC will cut people for only using 2 coats of wax instead of the mandated 3 coats? -
