I had an 89 Volvo with a 3406B 425 CAT that was turned up to 550 hp. With a Fuel Preporator on it I was getting 6.5 mpg.
My next truck was a 97 KW. It had an electronic, 470 hp, 12.7 Detroit. Not quite as much power, but it averaged over 7 mpg. I had never had any computer trouble with it when I sold it with 1,400,000 miles on it.
I don't mind a simple computer on a truck, but the new trucks now have way too much stuff being controlled by the computer. -
I remember in the late 80's a "computerized engine" was a mechanical motor with a rheostat for a throttle control- and a road speed governor. (A lot of Cummins motors had twisted fuel pump shafts from the roadspeed governors).

Yes, a lot of engine differences, most have been for the better though, all things taken into account. I don't miss the poor quality of fuel that was available "back in the day" either, and having water/fuel filter issues almost monthly. I don't miss an engine that was hard to get started because it was at/below 27 degrees without ether.
