Got my CDL Learners in the mail Saturday, now I just have to get fingerprinted for my Hazmat background check. I told my recruiter I wanted to go Dry Van, but now I have been thinking about going flatbed. Its not just the extra money, Im 37 and in pretty good physical condition and would like to keep it that way.

Are the miles just as good with flatbed though? I thought I read someone saying that they got fewer miles on Flatbed. If anyone could give me a clearer picture on this I would appreciate it.

I'm pulling more miles than I got in van. Most of my loads are 500+ miles. In van my average was 150-400 miles.

After ready DD's reply and a few of the Flatbed threads I called my recruiter and switched to Flatbed! Cant wait to get started, turned in my notice to my current employer with my last day being September 14th and my tentative date for RDTC in Marshfield, WI on October 8th.

Just be careful in flatbed. I fell off my trailer today because I wasn't paying attention.

Things like that is exactly why I am keeping my Aflac plan when I leave my current employer!

Just spent two weeks waiting for a medical release for a medication I dont even take anymore. Im more bothered that my doctor took two weeks to get the #### release done than being asked to provide one. At any rate I will get it faxed in to Roehl first thing Monday and get things moving again.

I went ahead and completed the preregistration for my TWIC card as I understand you should have one for the Flatbeds....#### they are expensive!

Any of you guys know a good place to park a truck on home time in the Richmond, Va. area?

I worked flatbed for Roehl for the past year until recently and I never had a TWIC card. Everyone I know who has had a TWIC card has used it maybe once. I wouldn't worry too much about it unless Roehl tells you they want you to have it after you get there. I just sort of "forgot" about it and never needed it and it only came up once. My fleet manager at the time said "Oh we need to get you that" and I was like "Oh yeah, we'll have to do that some time when I have the money" 6 months later I still didn't have it and it wasn't a problem.

As far as training goes (being a trainer like you asked earlier) I was a trainer there before I left. There is a little more money to be made, it's nothing major though, but it will bump your annual pay up a bit. I wouldn't even bother looking into something like that right off though. I drove almost 4 years before I tried training someone. Get yourself taken care of and think about teaching someone else a few years down the road. Better yet, stay where you are and avoid regret. :)

I just spoke with a Roehl recruiter yesterday. I have decided to go with them and their training program after 2 weeks of research. Sure, you have to pay some up-front costs, (as opposed to Stevens who will finance everything, including the bus ride there) but after hearing from some of their drivers on here and in person, and reading about their dedication to safety, it was an easy choice.

I am filling out the application today.

No one has said anything about the TWIC card but my paperwork mentions it...it will have to wait though at $130.00..thats alot money for something I may not use much. As for instructing I certainly have no interest in doing that anytime soon....I like to know what Im talking about first..lol.

As for staying where Im at...I have had that talk quite a few times...Im ready for a change...and a challenge!

Good luck with everything....I did alot of research as well and kept coming up with Roehl as having one of the best training programs. I dont mind the upfront cost if it gets me top notch training....and my own room for the duration!
