I am going to replace the cooler and re-plumb the lines.
Does anyone know if the trans needs to be EMPTIED before disconnecting these cooling lines (supply/return)
The Kenworth Dealer claims YES...but anyone that knows me knows how much I trust them...

I guess your asking if you remove the lines first will oil drain out of the trans? The answer is yes it will but not like if you were taking the drain plug out. The oil pump lines are higher up in the oil level of the trans so its not like its gonna be a big rush of oil coming out.
Undo the hardest line to get to first and put your finger over the outlet and put the new line on, your gonna loose a little oil but if you do it fast enough it wont be much, then do the other line. Make sure the lines are hooked up to the cooler first.
Start the truck and drive it a mile or so and check the oil level. If your adding a air to oil cooler and new lines its gonna be low.Hanadarko Thanks this. -
Yea, you know EXACTLY why I am doing this.....
I have an air-to-air cooler I have mounted up front.
The lines in the photo are brand new (May 2011)... A lot of $$ but only will reach to the Transmission Killer, I mean cooler..mounted into the frame area.
So I need to run all new lines up front, then like you said, pull one at a time and swap with the new lines..
Cheaper to do this than to have my transmission die a slow and silent death from this disaster (below) waiting to fail!

They do make a cooler and mount for the back of the trans so you don't have to run it to the front of the truck....

Thats why I was suggesting mounting on the trans. You could probably get away with using the same lines. The cost of them lines isn't cheap plus all the headaches in running the lines and mounting them so they don't vibrate or rub anything.

I have the Eaton 18025 cooler and ALL of the brackets in this image, but
not sure if they are the right ones for your mount idea or not.
Photo of something like this installed would be awesome.
But, if I dont have the right cooler then I am stuck doing what I originally planned on. This cooler wasn't free...

I've seen that style cooler mounted on the bottom of the trans under the splitter box. Thats were I was going to put mine but it was to big to fit. Any place under there is fine and it dont have to a mass of air going into it. Mine is not in the best place to get air and it runs 180 at the hottest. but most of the time 160~170. Hell of a lot cooler than the water to oil cooler at 200 all the time.

There should be a bracket that bolts to the trans and the cooler bolts to it. The bracket shouldn't cost that much.

I just mounted it in the front, since I had all the parts already.
Next up is to get it plumbed.
I always worry about hanging stuff off the back of something like a trans, in case
I run over something and flip it up inside...(like a gator or something).
Having it up front helps reduce that...
