As I hope to be coming back into the trucking industry from a 5 year hiatus, I still kept my class "A" cdl, hoping that one day I would be able to drive a truck. Now I am able to, but lack of recent experience and where I live (I live in the middle of Texas) is hindering my ability to hire on with a company. I have an "X" endorsement as well as a TWIC card. I have talked with many companies that say I need to go back into training due to my lack of recent experience. I guess they are right. So I stated to talk with them in regards to going with their programs.
The question I have is, if I go with a company that trains in another state other than my home state of Texas, do I have to give up my Texas issued cdl for a new cdl where the school is located at? CDL's are not cheap, and to me it doesn't make sense to give up a good cdl for a temporary cdl issued by a state that you will only be in for up to 30 days or less and then have to reapply for your home states' cdl.

Try looking at some of the Oil patch driving jobs. There are a BUNCH of them in Texas, and some are not so picky about recent experience. Somebody might give you a shot without a Refresher course. Craigslist has lots of jobs in San Antonio, Odessa and Dallas too. Good Luck !

I have been doing that, as a matter of fact I put in an application Thursday with one. Hopefully they will give me a chance. It means having to stay in a man camp or finding a motel nearby, but I can do that. Just come home every other week or so.
Just trying to put out feelers concerning options with national carriers. Also maybe an O/O might give me a chance. I will never know unless I ask. Do you know the requirement for switching over drivers' licenses? -
If you haven't been keeping your medical card current call your DMV and make sure your CDL is still valid . Some states downgrade a driver's license if his medical card expires .
HeWhoMustNotBeNamed Thanks this. -
I do have a current medical card, and it will expire in August 08, 2013. If I haven't hired on with anybody by then, I will get another one at my own expense.

I am in a similar situation to you. I have a Class A CDL and have kept my Medical current. Only problem is that I haven't trucked for years. The company that has said they will bring me on once I get my Haz endorsement, thinks I'll have to go through CDL school all over again, since that is the only way they hire entry level drivers. Kind of a bummer but I understand and am willing to go to whatever extent I need to..., cheerfully!
Good luck to you, DaffyDude! -
Good luck to you too Twicebit! Just checked craigslist for my area. Going to call a couple more local companies, see what they say. Maybe yes, maybe no. Gotta just keep trying.

To go threw training no u won't got to change ur cdl..

Companies would want you to take a refresher course, so no you wouldn't have to change anything. You wouldn't be going to get your CDL since you already have a valid one. It wouldn't matter what state you did the refresher in. I've never been to one personally, but a refresher has always sounded to me like you're just going back through truck driving school without the obtaining a CDL process.
