I hear all the gripe about changing to different motor oils. I have always run Mobil Delvac 15-40 in my truck since day 1, but here recently purchased OPS Eco Pur system and when I do the install was going to go to a synthetic oil. I was thinking about AMSOIL Premium API CJ-4 Synthetic 15W-40 Diesel Oil or something made by LUCAS such as Lucas 15W-40 Magnum High TBN CI-4 Oil. I was curious what everyone's thoughts were on changing motor oils? Also, I am open to everyone's suggestion on which type of motor oil to use. Thanks!
Changing to a different motor oil. Any Opinions?

I have been using Schaeffer Oil products. Best oil sample results I have ever gotten from any engine I have owned. And Schaeffer has been at the oil and lube game longer than anyone else in N. America.... since 1839. They also developed the lubes for the Apache Attack Helicopter and are a primary supplier for the M1 Abrams tank. They even make products for the other oil companies, Shell in particular, that couldn't seem to develop lubes that customers wanted that would hold up to their demands. And their pricing on many products even beats Wally World, let alone the boutique oil pricing.
Current pricing based on price sheet given me by my rep at the first of the year.... of course, it could change at any time....
Schaeffer 9000 5w40 full synthetic, $627 for a 30 gal drum, $1118 for a 55 drum
Schaeffer 7000 15w40 synthetic blend, $552 for a 30 drum, $981 for a 55 drum.
Shipping is free to the house on all oil product orders over $375. With the 55 drums, they include free oil sample kits. The other oil brands are good, but not the best value. You pay a lot for marketing and distribution with the others. Schaeffer ships to you direct from their HQ in St. Louis. You do have to go thru a rep to order the products. You can use a rep from anywhere in the country, they do not have to be local. I highly recommend my rep, Dan Dykema, who lives near me in Sully, Iowa. His site and contact info is.... http://www.schaefferoilreps.com/dandykema/ He will get you good information and give you the best wholesale pricing and shipped free to your doorstep.

You can buy in gallon jugs also. I have jugs sitting around, so I just get oil in a drum and then fill jugs when I need to change. I used to do my own oil changes, but am getting lazy. I carry filters and oil, and have a shop near me just change the oil for me for only a labor charge.
I presently use the 7000 in my Detroit 60. Great oil sample results. Better sample results than I was getting with a Delo 5w40 full synthetic I was using before, and cheaper in price than the Delo from Wally World.
You don't hear much about Schaeffer, only because they target the commercial markets and don't focus in on retail like the others do. But they have a long reputation for providing great products at excellent pricing.
Last two oil samples from my Detroit using Schaeffer 7000 15w40. I now have a base line, so will be extending drains a little at a time to find the right range. The oil has a very strong additive package, especially when it comes to zinc and moly.

Well that sounds like a good deal for synthetic. After calculating it out for the Full Synthetic it comes out to just over $20 a gallon. IMO that is rather reasonable. I have never heard of the outfit but, I will definitely take Schaeffer into consideration, based on those prices AND free shipping I would be stupid not to. Hell, For a 30 Gallon drum of AMSOIL cost me $850 plus shipping.
Your oil sample looks good, just curious how many miles you had on it when you sampled? -
I'm assuming you guys do your own oil changes?

Good to know. Being new to the industry, not sure how much is realistic for me to do. On my car, I can do brakes, oil, spark plugs, simple stuff. But, I figured this would be a whole different ball game.

I can my own oil, grease, air filters (inside and out of truck), minor engine work (anything on the outside such as manifold, gaskets, alternator, starter, NO internal work that is all done by a friend), brakes, any air system work (compressor, air valves, air lines). If you have knowledge from working on car you can probably work on your truck. It was always helpful that I had a friend that taught me a lot of what I know but most of it is just taking this part off and putting the new one back on. Alot of times you can find help on Truckers Report or on Letstruck.com, sometimes I have to call the dealership. You can save a hell of a lot of money by doing stuff yourself.

I'm thinking about switching to Napa brand 15w40. They've got a sale until the end of the month $49.95 a 5 gallon bucket. Tractor Supply Traveler brand 15w40 is the same price as well. Might be a good time to stock up.
