what should i look for in buying a fairly inexpensive CB and antenna for a company truck (no slip-seat) any additional grounding, coax upgrade (an antenna already comes on truck) shop tuning ETC i should think about?

If it is a Freightliner, get another antennea. The ones that come built into the mirror housings will barely reach to the other side of the truck.

it's an International but the antenna is only 4-5 foot long. wrapped in black with a small spiral of wire going up it. i plan to put my own on there.

Pilot used to have some decent priced cobras on sale.

IMO, I'd stop at a reputable cb shop and see what they have used...nothing wrong with a used Cobra29 or such...
My first "good" radio was a Cobra29 I bought used from a CB shop...that was in 1992 and it still works fine (I keep it as a spare)...
