For you experienced OTR drivers, where do you get your water for drinking or any other use?

I'm not overly picky about the quality of my water so long as it isn't nasty. At home, I'm perfectly happy with water from the tap and I never buy bottled water because it is expensive and wasteful. On the road, however, I'm not sure what to expect as far as water quality at truckstops, rest areas, etc.

Also, even if I'm happy with the quality of tap water, are truck stops likely to let me fill up jugs of water from their sinks or water fountains?

I would like to think I can just carry several large jugs of water and refill them as needed wherever I am (will not be home frequently enough to refill there). If I don't like the taste I can get a filter pitcher to run it thru before drinking it. Is that a realistic plan?

Many stores, including Walmart, have those self-service water refills. They usually range from $0.20-0.37 a gallon. That is what I use. I now live in an area where I can't drink the tap water, so I go through tons of the bottled water refills. When possible, I fill up from the tap from my sister's house also. My husband usually goes through about a gallon a week, unless I am with him, then we can't possibly carry enough water.

Your poll didn't give the option I use . I refill jugs at the outdoor spigots at rest areas . Actually , I'm rarely gone more than 2 nights at a time now so I can bring enough water from home .

    Wow! Thanks Rick!

I didn't even know that was an option. That seems like the best option of all. Free, available at multiple sites along any major interstate and if its nasty I can always filter it.

    Sounds like a winner.

We carry a 2.5 gallon water dispenser that we bought at Walmart. It sits on the shelf over the table, secured with a bungee cord. (I like to boast that we have "running" water in the truck!) I have a plastic pitcher that I fill at rest stops whenever we stop. We have never run out of water, gotten sick or had bad tasting water. Most of it is used for cooking and coffee making in the truck. We have never filtered the water we get.

I usually get my water from rest areas, too. I do filter, but I don't think it's really necessary. I just prefer my water to taste like nothing, and filtering helps accomplish that.

Make sure you have a large enough bottle to last a few days. While rare, it is possible to get stuck somewhere without a water supply, and you don't want to run out. The same goes for food, too.

At home, at rest areas, at our terminals and sometimes at truck stops.
