I have been googling around lately for paper log strategies. I have found some long discussions here and elsewhere but not much good info yet.
What I did find was a surprising quantity of preachy self-righteous blather about being a slave to to the HOS rules. Are these people ignorant noobs or just hypocrites? I don't admire anyone who obeys the law just because it is the law - to me that is just groveling cowardice. I don't give a #### about legal or illegal but I do care about right and wrong. My "cheating" is usually right because it harms no one and benefits all parties involved. The HOS regs are often wrong because they undermine my earning and my safety - they prevent me from driving when rested and pressure me to drive when fatigued.

It was just strange to read all the driver posts stating:"I always drive legal %100 of the time" Is that foolishness or just deceit? No company could stay in business if half its drivers logged everything "legal". Indeed, the American economy would collapse if even half of us did so. All parties involved know it - even the D.O.T.

Consider: the D.O.T. regularly audits large companies and when they find that nearly all the drivers are getting loaded/unloaded in a consistently miraculous 15 minutes, what do they do? NOTHING, that's what. Why? because they, like the shippers, carriers, manufacturers and drivers themselves understand perfectly well that: when the driver cheats, everybody wins everyone gets paid more, more tax is generated and the wheels of the economy turn more freely.

Of course, we should operate safely and guard our licenses - does that really need to be said? My point is that following the rules just because they are the rules is shooting one's self in the foot. When we let the letter of the law defeat the spirit of the law we are not deserving of freedom.

So, I won't bother going into all the e-log strategies for maximizing drive time here - the quality of drivers I hope to hear from makes that unnecessary. What I'd like to hear - the thread I want to see, is about effective strategy for maximizing mileage with paper logs.

Any good ideas? We're just talkin' here :biggrin_25520:

I'm suprised all logs are not electronic that are directly sent to DOT and monitored. I always liked to think of log books as Short Stories, based on a true story...

then ya got the folks with two or three logs...

Probably 98% of the regulations we are dealing with now are the result of the crap most of us did on a regular basis in the decades past. That most certainly included "maximizing miles". The fact of the matter is that fatigue is a lethal hazard and while I won't argue things have gone too far, you have to realize the rules are addressed to the lowest common denominator, the idiot who will put you, me and mine in harm's way for no better reason than to maximize miles. Don't be that idiot please.

Yeah, that's probably coming but I'd like to know how to make hay while the sun still shines. Really, all any of us want is to have control and exercize our own judgment over our work day - you know anything vis-a-vi the subject?

Right, mature and self-respecting people resist being ruled by the "lowest common denominator". We are looking for info and strategy here - you got anything?

Funny thing is, a driver can run 100% legal and yet be severely fatigued. In fact, it is my firm belief that the 14 hour rule is a major contributor to drivers operating their trucks while fatigued.

More like the constant changing of the driving cycle than the 14 hour window. If you can work a regular schedule, the body is easily acclimated to it.

I would hate to help you cheat, but since you are so gung ho about doing it. All you do is cover your tail. Know which states are known for pulling people over for randoms like Texas. Know which scales are known for pulling your company in because of their bad csa score. Other then that Drive to you sleepy set your clock for 2 or 4 hours and do it again. But the risk of getting csa points for falsifying your log book, and the possibility of getting into an accident that you didn't cause, but because you wouldn't have been there in the first place if you would of took a 10 hour break instead of a 3 hour break. Is not worth the headache, stress, and the extra money you might make running 4 to 5,000 miles a week. You will get burned out quick, and your company will expect you to run like that all the time. Even when your body is screaming for rest. Really not worth it young blood. I did it for years, and I ran from elogs and I have a lot less stress now that I don't have to worry about doctoring up my log book.
