Real common around here with fuel tankers, almost all the new ones I see have this setup on them.

One second thought maybe I have seen tankers like that. I was thinking in terms of dry vans with closed tandems but its still a great idea for when you're light or empty. They also have twin screw tractors with the lift-able rear drive axle. A lot of guys that run local in Oregon use them because of the funky way they calculate their road taxes. That would be neat to be able to run around on 3/5 axles when appropriate

A lift on the back axle is a waist off money.

There is another benefit to having a lift axle.
It puts more weight on your drives which is allways a good thing.

While we are talking about axles and saving $$$,has nobody ever taught about putting a self-steering axle on a trailer?
If you were running shorthaul and heavy loads there would be savings.
Extra weight would be less then 400 lbs.

It's not practical. I don't know why you would need one on a 53' van in the US or Canada.

if you put a lift axle on do it on the front axle. most factory lift axle trailers iv pulled are in the rear but the few that i pulled with the lift in the front work way better

They actually run a steerable lift axle in ontario and Quebec on their 4 and 5 axle trailers lifting them to turn was chewing up roads too much with 120,000 lbs plus loads I'm not sure but I think the 5 axle units have 2 steer axles .. Personally I think the U.S. Has the right idea by limiting weights to 80k

Don't forget the doors. Without good gloves, a guy could chip a nail on one of those. Downright dangerous.
