Thanks for the memories. I remember when I was in the Navy in '65, some joint in Searchlight was off limits, probably a cat house, can't remember. Mina used to be Billie's day and night.

Running Windy to SLC if you see Reno or a Sign saying "Welcome to California" turn around.
-
Don't even know where to begin, so much grasping at thin air. I guess Ill go in order.
Never stated I took I-80 after I reached Sacramento and headed south, Not sure where you read that
The whole 10 or 15 people who do live there will be ok, pretty sure they are aware of the open country they live in.
I didn't say the mountains were on the WY border.
I was actually indeed referring to Iowa 80 truck stop, but you and your infinite wisdom somehow assumed I meant some other random truck stop. Life for you must be like a giant "Who's On First" routine.
Indeed it was tongue and cheek, and more or less light hearted commentary.
I have heard of high mountain desert, and using the term Tundra also adequately described the terrain which makes one wonder what you are getting at. I know a lot of people (much like yourself) are unaware that the word "tundra" is not limited to land with snow on it. It simply means a cold subsoil (year round) and a low number of trees (if any).
SLC, as in downtown, may not be the prettiest (even though I don't think it looks bad), but the surrounding area and land of SLC was the focal point of the statement, which I am sure any other reader could grasp. Technicality Jones seems to be the only one struggling with it.
SLC and the surrounding area has snow TOPPED mountains year round, including when I was just there at the start of July. I stated "streams AND rapids" key word "and" thus separating the two words. However you somehow took it as "rapids within the streams". Once again, another gross over attempt at trying to correct something that does not need correction.
"Those messages are a message to the travelers behind them, a 50 year tradition" .... Okay... how is that any different of me saying "random #### wrote in the salt as a tourist tradition"
When you "cross over" you will dissolve into the ground and have no conscious thought because your brain and body will no longer be functioning, thus being "dead". I know getting older makes one want to believe more and more that there is something else after, maybe so they can sleep easier at night. Doesn't make it true though
You must not have done Donner much, seeing as it was still snow covered at the beginning of July this year when I was there. Slick / partial ice roads at the summit. And I indeed have done the route multiple times, including in mid winter. I guess it makes sense you assumed an OTR trucker only drove in June / July
I am sure you are a fairly friendly old fella in real life, but you remind me of some of the older truckers who sit in a lounge mid conversation and HAVE TO interject and show just how much they know, when the convo was going fine and dandy. Sure experience is a good thing to share, but sometimes you are just digging dirt and trying way too hard to make corrections and opinions known when they aren't really applicable. Like the guys you hear doing 40 minute run on sentences in the trucker lounges that just get brutally mundane. -
You might want to reread your words that I was good enough to quote before making any comment. So in your questions of what I could be saying or where I got the "thought"....read your words directly without the assumption of "everyone will understand, no matter how I phrase it." Yes I did catch your thoughts....check close on the truck stop as (your words)..."a big crowded truck stop as you enter the State"...The "J" is the first truck stop as you enter Iowa from the East on I-80!
Not done much over Donner you say? Try 5 years of dedicated runs from Sparks to the bay area and central valley and up to Redding...then back to Sparks....6 days a week, sometimes two trips back and forth over Donner. Actually had to chain up one 4th of July! As to your "year round snow topped mountains" around SLC....not year round sonny, not hardly...this year they had (as did we here in CA) an exceptional and late snow season...but those "mountains" surrounding (only on one side...the east side) of SLC are the buck ugliest mountains without snow covering them....and give the valley a little time to "dry up"....ugly ugly brown, only green is the trees and grass planted by man....yes Mormon man actually.
Good to see you went back and corrected your desserts in the desert, and a few other corrections....but you left a few incorrect also!
Quote:
and ran 80 all the way to Sacramento, and then down to L.A, then Phoenix, Then Dallas, Then... Blah blah i digress.
Right there..."80 all the way to Sacramento...." do you see the reference now? Talk about run-on sentences.....sheesh, and with capitals in the middle after commas! Don't try to play grammar or spelling games on me...that is my forte...ask anyone here on the Forum!
Trust me...my responses were somewhat tongue in cheek...I guess it was just the way you were so negative about an easy run for a newbie and degrading what he is looking forward to doing!
One more thing....you might try and learn how to quote a post when responding to one....courtesy goes a long way...and it makes it easier on us "old farts" to try and make sense of what you are trying to put into words!

Elk Mountain and some of the other notable mountain ranges in Wyoming will certainly get your attention in the winter!
