After nearly four years of construction, China's longest underwater highway tunnel is now open to vehicle traffic.
At a length of 10.79 kilometers (6.65 miles), the Taihu tunnel stretches under Lake Taihu in eastern China's Jiangsu Province, about 50 kilometers east of Shanghai.
According to government officials in Jiangsu, the tunnel was built at a cost 9.9 billion yuan (about $1.56 billion). Construction began on January 9, 2018.
Ryfast tunnel, which runs between the city of Stavanger and the municipality of Strand.
The underwater tunnel portion of the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line, a vehicle highway that travels under Tokyo Bay, is 9.6 kilometers.
In terms of underwater tunnels in general, though, the top honor goes to the Channel Tunnel, which connects England and France by rail. Its submerged portion runs for 37.9 kilometers, the longest of any underwater tunnel in the world.
China's longest underwater highway tunnel is now open

Is this going to lead to one of their unoccupied ghost cities? I still can't get a handle on that whole real estate bubble thing....

Makes no sense. If it were across a river or coastal area, i could understand. But it is across a lake that already has road infrastructure around it.
I suppose it could be a "proof of concept" project.Pamela1990 Thanks this. -

The mega highways, bridges, tunnels, are about the economy and ease of travel. Bringing the whole country together through infrastructure.
For example, travel to Tibet is easy now with high speed rail and modern freeways.
The trains have extra oxygen piped into the passenger cars for the comfort of people that aren't used to the high altitude and accompanying thin air/low oxygen. High speed trains going to Tibet also have a doctor office incorporated into the train for passengers that may get ill from the high altitude or any other reason.Last edited: Jan 4, 2022

Man made 1,500 mile river that runs South to North
1,500-mile
In December 2014, China quietly unveiled one of its South-North Water Diversion Project (南水北调工程): a 1,500-mile canal/tunnel that carries water from central China to Beijing. The goal of this project is to link the Yangzi River (in the South) with the Yellow River (in the North) via tunnels and canals.
