oh....a couple of other things.......remember, your time is how you make your money. If you burn a day's worth of hours on a deadhead, that's another day you can't produce revenue.....essentially, you lost 2 days. Second, have you seen the weather in that part of the world??? I've seen snow exactly 3 days this winter......kinda why I'm doin' what I'm doin'.....

If your dead heading you are moving for free if you haul a crappy load at least your not moving for free. Those couple hundred extra bucks add up to thousands over a years time and could make a few trucks payments this year.

He did it right! If the load pays high enough per mile INCLUDING DEADHEAD then he is making good. If he spent a day with a heavy load out of Denver for .95 cents ..That sucks compared to bob-tailing (great fuel mileage that way) a day for $1.50 or more .. uhmm ... hell yay i would take it!

How do figure moving it for free.. not if the load pays high enough. That is where people screw up they don't look at how it pays per mile Including deadhead miles.

I appreciate all the comments and advice. It is a learning curve for sure. I did try to find a load to get me part way to El Paso, but no go. I also just got my truck back last night from a repair and really wanted to just bobtail a bit and see what happened with the truck. I made it the 656 miles to El Paso bobtailing today. Got 8.7 mpg. Pick up load tomorrow and will deliver on Friday. So $4200 for five days of driving. $840 a day revenue seems alright to me. And I will still have 3 days left to get more revenue. Already looked at loads out of that area, they look good. And weather looks good for the next week, at least for now. I also am trying to get by and see family in Florida. Lots of things influence you out here, as all of you know.

    Take care.

Oh. And it was over $2.00 a mile including the deadhead, not before the deadhead.

I agree it's a lot of deadhead miles but he was in .. what i call the black hole for freight.. extreme situations sometime merit extreme action if it's worth it! I have done similar long deadhead mile runs when stuck up in North Dakota.

Not an idea situation to be in, but hes done the math and is coming out with a decent rate, and bobtailing is cheap compared to pulling even an empty trailer due to the very good MPG you can get. How you want to run all comes down to what it costs you per mile and what you want to bring home, obviously still making a good profit on this load so that's OK in my book. Very nice long $4200 gross run that leaves 3 more days in the pay period, paying $2/mile, 656 miles of which is running bobtail getting excellent MPG (again, at $2.00 per mile!), shoot man, why not?!

I'll tell ya why not... from my point of view, lol. Not because of the deadhead, but because of the chance that you show up to the shipper and the shipper says "sorry, we cancelled that load!!". Not knockin' ya at all, I'd just be scared to death that load would cancel LOL. THEN that deadhead would really hurt because you might be able to get the $150 out of Schneider for the cancelled load, but you spent roughly $300 in fuel on the bobtail deadhead.

But look, chances are everything will go fine, and you'll come out ahead with an awesome week. Look man, you run things the way YOU need to run things to be successful, regardless of how SOMEONE ELSE thinks that needs to be done. KEEP AT IT BUD.

Yeah. I thought about the shipper canceling the load too. But there were three of them going to the same place. So I figured one of them would go!
