I've been with Mercer since April of last year pulling a van (own my own truck, leased a van). As with any kind of freight there are busy and slow periods but I have done much better here than at a "dollar a mile + FSC" type companies I've dealt with in the past.

This year has been about 15% better on a daily gross income basis than last year which I attribute to having learned the ropes and the load pay seems to have inched higher as well. That having been said, I've met a fair number of van operators who simply aren't doing well.

    Good luck,

    Jim

Thank you for the info I own my truck and I leased to one of those dollar a mile company pulling reefer sometimes its a 1.10 a mile + FSC they keep me busy but not making more than 2400 miles a week thats like 2000 2200 a week after company expenses for almost 6 months I’m wonder if I can do better at mercer or just go ahead with own authority wich is a bigger step, I consider Mercer type of company because its like the start getting ready for own authority what do you think
    Thanks

Dude I was grossing near $1.70 all miles ($2.50 in Landstar-speak) pulling van at Interstate Distributor, and they were renowned for their lack of freight. Self-dispatch percentage pay is what it's all about. You just gotta study the lanes.

Last year I averaged $3,700 gross ("Total to the Truck" in Mercer parlance) for each full 7 days I was over the road pulling my van. This year that number is over $4k and I don't run hard at all -- nothing like when I was a company driver.

One thing I do like about the van freight we get is that most of the pickups and deliveries are first come, first served with a wide range of times (eg 8 AM to 4 PM, Monday through Friday) and most don't require appointments of any type. This lets me work much more to my schedule rather than dancing to the tune of some dispatcher back at HQ. I also prefer lighter freight and I would say 70-80% of my loads are under 20k, compared to 90% that were over 40k back when I pulled a reefer.

I just looked up my stats and I've driven just over 55,000 dispatched miles so far this year and I've grossed $88,281.49 before expenses. By my math that is just over $1.60 paid to the truck per dispatched mile.

    Good luck,

    Jim
