Branch manager/underwriter for a Berkshire Hathaway affiliate. Here in SoCal, a named driver policy for a driver with 36+ months CDL experience, decent mvr, 36 or more would cost around $ 18,000 for $ 1,000,000 liability only.

We write a number of named driver policies......don't recall ever being asked for same by a driver to do so for his own protection.

Most often when we write a named driver for a trucking firm it's to handle that valuable driver who can't seem to stop hitting things

So would you write a policy on that same driver that was a company driver driving some one else’s truck? And they carried the liability on the truck...

And if it’s $18,000 that’s out of reach for a company driver making 60-80 k......

Two ways to write a Named Driver policy.....depends on who pays for it, and who is Named Insured.

When the company has a "valuable" driver (relative?) with a mvr to the point that the companies insurance carrier says enough, and excludes the driver, we write a Named Driver policy FOR the company, and they pay for it.

If a driver wants his own protection I recognize that $ 15,000 - 20,000 is going to be rough......just depends on what his asset base is that he's trying to protect. If he has a couple hundred grand in equity on home, plus vehicle assets it may still be worthwhile. For someone starting out, with no assets, it's a easy no call.

Most often we see Named Driver deals on car/truck hikers....where they are driving different vehicles all the time.

Thank you for the information on the topic. This insurance question was always on my mind. Larger the company & or if the company has the means to insure its self the better... I have seen a few garbage / refuse companies sell out due to not being able to make profit due to higher insurance cost. The most important thing for a driver to do is be safe in driving and make sure the equipment is good.

So you say! It's the internet, you can be most anything you desire. I don't get impressed by someone's knowledge especially when they enter a discussion like you did belittling others. Even if you are whom you say you are that is not something I respect. Oh one more thing, you have NO idea what I know or don't know about the insurance business or underwriting. Because I try to not come off like some know if all as you did.

No, actually it was you that entered this thread with a condescending attitude like you were the greatest thing since sliced bread. You want your knowledge to be respected try to come off with a bit of a better attitude. As I said you might be who you say you are, honestly it doesn't mean a thing to me one way or another. I just did not like the way you entered the thread. There was no use whatsoever in doing that. Totally uncalled for.

Not the greatest thing since sliced bread, but I do KNOW insurance, so I try to educate those who clearly don't have the knowledge or experience I have.

If you don't want to learn anything, then just block me

$18K non tax deductible is out of reach for any company driver. But I’m surprised they will even write that policy......
