I have a class 1 and about 2 million miles of O/O flat deck experience. I also have Glaucoma in one eye. After 4 operations it has stabilized and I'm able to continue working. So far.

If or when the eye stops working, I will loose the class 1 but, in BC at least, be able to keep a class 3. But I'm still raising a family and need to make serious dollars so working in the Fraser Valley with a class 3 is pretty much not going to work.

Any thoughts about driving jobs as an O/O or company driver for a guy in my predicament? Alberta or Sask. seem to be the places to be.

    Thanks.

Question... How do you lose the class 1 but keep the class 3? That sounds a little weird to me. But anyways there's lots of vacuum and water truck jobs in the patch if that was something that interested you.

Your guess is as good as mine. Pure speculation on my part is that the regs. we're written when a class 3 truck meant 3 axles and 22,500 KG so physical size played a part. But now with twin steer tri drives...it seems odd to me. The class is defined by the towed weight.

So what does a vacuum or water truck driver make?
    Thanks for the tip.

When I was at clean harbours in lloydminster a few years back, I was told a body vac driver was paid $21-23 per hour. I know when out on the rigs around Grand Prairie or whitecourt it would be higher.

You should be able to make a bit more as a vacuum truck driver than other driving jobs. $29-32 (29 is what I made as a vac green horn 5 years ago, I knew swampers who were making $25 an hour, but not the one i was working with) an hour would be typical, as many hours as you want to work. Most people will tell you working on a vac truck in the patch is one of the harder jobs you can do, but when your not doing easy work like sucking pigs out of a line, but doing the harder work like cleaning drilling rig mud tanks or cleanups you should expect to have a swamper. If your working as an owner operator, and there will be those opportunities out there, you will make better money than your probably making now, then again vac trucks are more expensive and other things like safety/regulations could present challenges.

I think he may be refering to loosing the class 1 due to the drivers medical. Not sure about the other provinces, but in Alberta you don't need a drivers medical for a class 3 licence.

I know a fellow in Alberta that's been deaf all his life. He's ran bed trucks and winch tractors. Alberta decided after 30 + years to take away his class 1 but he could still have a class 3.

My buddy that he worked for took away his small bed and trailer and he put him on a Tandem Steer, Tri Drive Bed instead. Way bigger truck than what he had before but it's all legal.

He just bontails from rig to rig. All he does is tear out and rig up.

Every one owns a vac truck out there, so that's why prices are so low. A swamper in McMurray was making more than a semi-vac operater in Lloyd.
