I've got a Texas Class A CDL with restrictions. Vehicle without air brakes and intrastate commerce.

I just moved to Kansas 7 months ago and have been out of work since. I tried PRIME and they said they couldn't accept me because of my unemployment.

Here's what I need to know. Should I go ahead and change that license to Kansas? I noticed most of the schools require a Texas CDL permit.

I need a coach. I'm not sure which way to go with this.

If you now live in Kansas, yes, transfer the license.
Please explane the restrictions. Are you too young to Drive "Interstate" ie. under 21.
Is it because of a lack of school for the FMCSR, log, H.O.S, whistle blower regulations needed to drive interstate.
The answers to these questions may have a big impact on you ability to drive OTR.

You should probably get your air brake restriction lifted. My guess is you took the test with a straight truck like a F-450 and a electric brake trailer. Why do you have a intra-state restriction? Do you have a medical condition? I have seen a few of these for vision problems, last two have been blind in one eye or had a glass eye.

The restrictions are because I got the license for guard rail contracts. I was hauling a bob cat and guard rail with a 1 ton dually for contracts in the state of Texas. Ranchers are starting to have to get CDL to pull their 4 and 6 horse trailers.

I was gonna go back the next week with the dump truck and get the air brake certification but an 18-wheeler ran over it. :biggrin_255: No joke.

I haven't changed my residence yet so I was wondering about keeping the Texas license for now since a lot of the schools I looked at required a Texas CDL permit. I have the license.

If I get the air brake certification how would I go about getting interstate commerce certification? Also, since I'm over half way there with the Class A CDL would partnering with an experienced driver be the way to go?

I don't know, I am not familiar with Texas laws. You would be better to take advice from a Texas driver. Good Luck.

im not familiar with the texas laws myself either but i am familiar with the fact that majority of bigger companies require certain amount of otr experience to get on with em. you should be able to go to the dmv and get your license info changed and maybe see about renting a truck to take the test from a big rental company like ryder or penske or whatever. maybe you can get a discount deal since it's for a test. maybe someone with the rental company can accompany the truck so it's made sure to be just for a driving test. some driving schools do that in an extreme situation if they have a classful of students and no training trucks, all full, broke down, etc. i don't know what they would do for just one person, but it's worth a shot. with the no otr experience though, i think you're s.o.l. on just hopping in a rig and going for sure. you would have to be trained for a few months or weeks or however long the company makes new drivers train. good luck bro:biggrin_25519:

I've got a year of experience on that CDL but it was just a 1 ton dually hauling a bobcat and guard rail. The air brake certification shouldn't be any problem. I can beg a truck somewhere.
