Hello all,
I recently acquired my Class A CDL permit in PA. Now I am not sure what I wanna do with it. I have been involved in the Towing & Recovery industry for almost 8 years now, but now I feel that it is time to become a big boy. The company I am currently with has the fleet of Class A vehicles (Heavy Wreckers, TT's and Multi Car Haulers), but I'm not doing much with any of them. I had originally planned on getting my CDL thru them using their equipment, but now I am having second thoughts. I would like to put myself thru school, but I do not have the time. I have also considered going to work OTR with a company who will put me thru school, but I would be taking a LARGE pay cut.
What to do?? Any suggestions??
Thanks, Ryan
Class A permit in hand, now what to do with it. . . . . .

Pay cut?? Currently at company for 8 years?? And they ASSIST you with getting your Class A with equipment usage and training? Sounds like the way to go, I would do anything (personally) to stay away from OTR driving.

I'd stay right where you're at, hoss. A company that's willing to offer training on their equipment without costing you the earth in funding is a good company. You might not use the heavier equipment right out the door after recieving your CDL, but your company will bear in mind that you took the initiative to learn on your own. Besides, you really want to piss away 8 years at the same job in this economy? I wouldn't. Better the job you have than the job you want, at least until more jobs become available.

why take a pay cut just to learn
just stay where you are at and uses thier equipment to take the test
besides 8 years is long time to give up to start over at some bottom feeder company -
Am I the only one who saw that he's only been with the company for 9 months not 8 years? He has 8 years in the biz...RyanLeary77 and BigJohn54 Thank this. -

I'm going to a Tech school and got financial aid so it's really not costing me much. Plus still working my third shift job so it's going to be long days, but that's trucking so I'll get used to it.
Good luck to you in whatever process you choose. -

my work schedule has been so busy that I haven't had a chance to go for it, until lately. I am going for it on July 29th.
