Yes he does get laid off in the winter. You would think it is year round but it isn't where we live.

Unemployment in Cali probably pays better than driving for a mega .......

Try to get on the trailer side at the plant if you want trailer experance .....

Thank you all for your help and comments. At this point he gets laid off, we actually live in the mountains, and the work does slow down during the winter. Although this winter there isn't much of a winter at all. He's just ready to move on to something else, driving Redi-mix is not all it's cracked up to be either. And also it makes a difference what the company is like and how drivers are treated.

Submit lots of applications and take the best offer. You may be surprised. Some drivers submit 10 or 20 applications even if they don't think they're qualified for all of them and get some great job offers.

Hi Krang, I apologize. After being here a year (almost) there's just a never ending stream of drivers that have local jobs that want OTR, and OTR drivers that want local jobs. It seems you just can't win with advice. I'll admit, mixer is a tough job. OTR is a lonely, boring job (although social media has helped) and your marriage will surely suffer and is usually the last resort for newer drivers. The turn over is remarkably high. Local P&D ( pickup & delivery) would be much better, but you may have to move to big city for that. Best of luck.

Call T&T in Lodi, CA. They deliver bulk to Glass plants , clean work, steady work, Way better money than OTR, he would be driving between Lodi, Jamestown, Ione, Ridgecrest, LA, Chino, Corona,Tracey, Stockton, Sacramento, maybe some runs over to the Frenly NV area to bring loads back to the glass plants. They pay percentage, they have sleepers but driver taking there 10 off on the road have a choice between using the sleeper or Motel6.

Oh by the way he should just list experience as a Driver, if they ask tell them more, but only if they ask.

Who cares the post is not about you, get over yourself.

He wants otr because it is seasonal where they live. I gave them possible solutions for there situation. And of course it is always about money thats why most of us in the real world work.

    Chinatown Thanks this.

No offense I my criticism to your post..
but , again, you are making ALOT of assumptions in your post

Not all marriages suffer with OTR,some are quite happy with the working relationship(s) some couples develop over time with both spouses schedules..
And then you end it with telling someone who is seeking OTR that PD would be better?..Better for who?..you?

The guy and his wife are seeking info on making transition to OTR..

Believe it(or not) some of us(and our wives) are quite happy doing OTR ..

Chinatown and "semi" retired Thank this.

Did lots of tanker & refrigerated coast to coast also, but those flatbed loads were my favorite. I'd rather panhandle on a street corner than run P&D or local or LTL; Dang, I'm depressed just thinking about it!
