You have one license. The type of vehicle driven doesn't matter for restrictions. If you have a Class A with an auto restriction, then you have a Class A with auto restriction. You cannot drive any CMV with a manual.
If you go get retested, your license will reflect the vehicle tested in. I.E. if you test in a straight truck with a manual, you will no longer have the auto restriction. You also cannot drive a semi, or any CMV with a trailer over 10k lbs as a Class A is required, and you no longer have.otherhalftw and Wasted Thyme Thank this. -
Yup. That's the way it is, at least in Arizona.
I have had a Class B here for 15+ years, and upgraded to A in the last week. What a fiasco. Showed up in my one ton (gvwr 11500) and a 35' GN (gvwr 25k), valid for class A. They said that by using this combination for the A, I will: 1) lose the airbrake even though I've had airbrake forever, be auto only restricted, no manual, and no tractor-truck. I fought the airbrake for a few days with them and finally was able to keep the airbrake since the class B vs A airbrake system is basically the same except for glad hands and another parking brake knob for the trailer. But I did get the no manual transmission restriction which sucks because now I cant drive the old 65 international fire service bus...
To keep everything, at least from B to A in my case, I have to show up in a manual tractor with any trailer over 10k gvwr. -
No. it's one license. sucks, you need to show up in a class A with manual if you want to drive class B with a manual.

You should have also gotten a no 5th wheel restriction. Stupidest restriction there is, but if you test with a goose neck you can't pull a 5th wheel.SeeJayneRun Thanks this.

Seems like you only need to turn some miles and get used to the truck. Then learn to drive a standard personal vehicle. I recommend a Dodge from the mid 90's with a cummins. They are highly sought after so you can resell it easily if you want. Yet they drive better if you learn to double clutch.
So learn it on a personal vehicle (if you dont know how to do it already). Then go see an examiner and ask them if you can get the restriction removed if you show competency on the pickup.

you're correct, I got that one too.

I know that here in AZ, at the Goodyear office they will not remove restrictions unless you are in the class of vehicle combination that is on the license, or the sought after class of license. But if you have one of those one in a million examiners or DOT offices that are cool, maybe they would remove the restriction from the CMV license without you testing in a CMV. I doubt it, and certainly not here :/

One of the drivers I work with left milk hauling and went to cr England to get his class A. He was hauling milk on a class B in a triaxle with a manual. The road test was done in an autoshift.... so even though he had no such restriction under class B, he's stuck with it now. He can't even drive a class B manual anymore. I think its ridiculous, if he drove truck without the restriction in the past, he should have been able to not have the restriction.
Road testing in an autoshift is not smartXray4 Thanks this. -
I'm not 100% sure why you have asked this question. I just wanted to let you know to NEVER under any circumstances downgrade that Class A to a Class B! Re-test the full Class A if you have to, but don't make that mistake of downgrading!Xray4 Thanks this.
