Just a quick question, I'm trying to switch from OTR trucking to a local bus driving job with Utah Transit Authority so I know I need to go get my passenger endorsment but they say they require a class B cdl and i have a class A cdl. Does the class A cdl cover the class B cdl? Or is it a seperate CDL altogether? Just curious thanks!

    mje Thanks this.

A covers a B. You're good to go on the A vs. B part. Not sure on the passenger part of it.

    http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/registration-licensing/cdl/cdl.htm

"M" If a driver possesses a Class A CDL, but obtains his or her passenger or school bus endorsement in a Class B vehicle the State must place an "M" restriction indicating that the driver can only operate Class B and C passenger vehicle or school buses.

"N" If a driver possesses a Class B CDL, but obtains his or her passenger or school bus endorsement in a Class C vehicle; the State must place an "N" restriction indicating that the driver can only operate Class C passenger vehicle or school buses.

Actually no. I hold both a CDL A with a CDL B Hydraulic Restriction. If you go to drive a bus that has Hydraulic brakes some states (like my state) require you to take a written test for the passenger endorsement an also another driving test.

If you drive a bus that has air brakes just note you will be restricted to driving only that type of bus. Vice Versa on that also.

Here In PA if u have a Class A and u wanna drive a city passenger bus, I assume you have your air brakes endorsement so all u would need to take a passenger endorsement written test to smack it on your CDL. You know I was a School Bus Driver for almost 3 years before I started trucking. The way this industry is going, sometimes i feel like going back again. You will be part of a union, paid sick days and holidays. Most importantly, you get to go home to your family everyday.

There's a twist in it, not sure what it is, but I have everything but school bus.

You might find (falsely), that your class b is invalid.

OK first the class A will cover all vehicles that you drive with class B and C.

They require a MINIMAL of a class B to get the endorsement.

YOU won't NOT have a separate CDL, you will have an A with a S endorsement on it, and because you took your airbrake test, you will also have no airbrake restriction on it.

By the way, if the examiner allows you to do a combo road test for both the passenger and school bus, get both of them added to your license.
