i am 18 years old and looking to get my class B CDL in Georgia. i have some questions that need to be answered that i couldn't find in the state CDL book. i have made several attempts at several state DDS offices to answer these questions but nobody will give me a straight answer.
1. what can i drive? i have hear "just straight trucks" or "anything within the state" also i have heard "straight trucks anywhere, tractor trailer only in state"
2. what is the best type of company to work for with a class B? you're average joe blow that happens to own o dump truck. or try a company like borden milk delivering milk to schools (where my dad is trying to get me hired)
3. the main point to the previous question is that i am not exactly a profesional with manual shift in a pickup much less a rig and borden runs automatic trucks. but i want to drive a manual truck
any answers would be appreciated.

Class B covers anything under 10,000 lbs no tractor trailer combo. I believe you need to be 21 to cross state lines driving a commercial vehicle.
-
thank you thats what i figured but the DDS kinda raised my eye brow with all of the different answers i have gotten
critters Thanks this. -
Weight doesn't matter for class b, can't be combination ie tractor trailer, or straight truck pulling trailer. I have driven roll offs rated to 75k and it was a class b truck.
-
Weight does matter ,mine in first post were off, class b is under 26,000 sorry. But the weight does effect class.
-
Ok what's the weight then? Yes you are correct a straight truck under 26,000 does not need a class b license. Over that you need it. But as long as its not a combination vehicle you can go up to at least 80,000. I don't know over that, but we had straight truck roll offs that were that much all the time and a lot of the drivers were only carrying class b. and don't just come back and tell me they were illegal, otherwise in all the checks by dot then they would have been cited.

Get it right.
Class B vehicle over 26,001 lbs GVWR, trailer not over 10,000 lbs.
Class A vehicle over 26,001 lbs GCWR with trailer over 10,000 lbs.
Class B is anything without a trailer; bus, straight truck, dump truck, Zamboni, street sweeper.
Class A is your traditional semi.
At 18, anything you drive will have to be within your state. You need to be 21 to drive interstate. -
Look it up dude,26000 is a class B 26001 and over a class A. I was driving before CDL was around, but your close to right. Not gunna argue about this either.
