I am currently taking my class A classes to prepare for the driving test and have been looking at class A driver jobs to get a feeler as to what class A jobs are out there and I have an idea now. My question is I would like to learn more or look into being a class B driver for a route delivery driver with companies like Pepsi, air gas etc. need my hazmat which I am goin to test for soon but wanted to see what the pay difference and/or advancement possibilities of a class A versus a class B route delivery driver .

Starting as a B driver is great for experience driving a truck, Many B drivers make good money, There are food distribution companies, beverage etc, Amerigas , Pinicle Propane, home fuel oil delivery etc, many of these companies are paying $20-25/hr ,,now it requires more than sitting behind the wheel but it keeps you in shape, Go for it you will be home everynight and usually off weekends

I know sevreral A drivers that drive and prefer B work, given the right company money is no difrent with less dificulty, not less work mind you but look around and see where some of these guys have to jam a 48 or pup and think how much of a PIA was that one stop? Now do it 25 more times... it has alot to do with you more than the work. I love doing local flat, both 48 and a B flat but i got a friend who HATES even B flat work. Get your A but dont stay if your not happy or comfortable, i could make more running fuel but i have no desire to do it. But dont exspect your B work to mean #### to most A companys unless they run both A and B trucks

Where are you? That would change you best options. Up here you could pull as much as 22 bucks a hour with just a B. And air brakes but some people only want to pay 16 and exspect hevey labor. Gotta know your market to make best use of you options

Driving a class B truck doesn't earn you class A experience.

I am in NJ . I am currently training for the class A license but when I started all this I was looking I to a B job but I want to land a job somewhere that has the most potential , $ and growth. Correct me if I am wrong but it seems the class B delivery type jobs have more room for growth such as ops manager etc versus an A driving job where you most likely will just be a driver most of our career?

That is based completly on where you work. Some mix companys may have you do driving, dock work, loading unloading exc.. and they may have room for movment, maybe a slip seat job mostly b driving with some class A work to fill in for vacations or just driving. You need to ask when you apply, if your goal is not to remain a driver you have to word your questions carfully, if you are applying for a driving job and tell them your looking to move out of driving you will most likely be passed over. (There hireing a driver) but if you say something like im willing to do more than driving and would entertain other options if the company had opening as was interested in promoting from within... now your speaking there languge

Where I'm at right now I am never going to get out of being a driver. Where I used to work last year, I had a chance to be a dispatcher but didn't want to return to a job I didn't like.

As mentioned, it all depends on where you land. However your potential with some companies and a class A could lead you to a step into the office.
