Class B License

I do believe on this side of town (don't hold me to this). If your current license will not expire within one year all you need to do to upgrade to a class A permit is take the written for the vehicle you will be operating. If your license will expire within one year you will need to take all the test. Hope that answered your question.

 

You definitly need a permit, even though you have a Class B already. Unless you are pulling Tankers, Doubles Triples, or Hazmat, you should not have to take any written tests. You can also take those later, unless you will be taking your driving test with one of those trailers. And I hope you don't with doubles or triples! Just go in a tell them you want your Class A and you need your permit. It will cost 20 or 30 bucks, or whatever. They don't give you squat for free anymore.

 

I have had class B in florida for about 12 years. I am in the process of getting my class a and all I have to do is take the combination part of the written exam then take the driving test again in a combination vehicle.

 

If you're testing in a different state, you'll have to retake general knowledge and take combination. That's what I found out when I asked the Indiana DMV about transferring my Delaware class B license to class A.

But if you're staying in the same state, then I imagine just doing the combination vehicle written test will suffice. Best to call up the DMV for surefire answers though.
