Hi, I am trying to get into trucking but before I go to get my CDL, I want to see if anyone has any information on whether this situation could affect me getting hired.

Basically, I lived in California for a few years, and during that time, I got a fix-it ticket that I never paid off. The San Mateo county court suspended my license for Failure to pay Fine and it has been suspended since 2011. I don't have ANY other problems on there besides the suspension related to 40508A and 405095. I have been told on the form the court sent before that I can clear the suspension once I pay the fine. Also, now I live in Portland, Oregon, so I need to drive to begin with, but more importantly theres a lot of work out here for people with a CDL.

So my question is, if I pay the fine to restore my driving privelages, will the fact that I had a suspension cause any problem with employers if it was only related to a suspension from a fix it ticket?

I have called a company for cable installation, the woman said no, but for trucking (& for other trades jobs in general) it would help to know from a few more people.

Yes.....a suspension is a HUGE red flag to employers.
Pay the fine and give it a few years to clear off you MVR. Then start looking for work with a CDL, and BTW, keep the reinstated license CLEAN the entire time.

Pay the fine and get the license reinstated. Attend a private or community college CDL school and then a few companies will hire you. Many of the mega companies won't, but a few mid-size or smaller companies will.
May have to take what you can in the beginning; at least you will be gaining experience.
Probably find a job on Craigslist with a company that pays on 1099 vs. W-2
Apergis Transportation or Carolina Cargo might hire you. Companies are out there, but you'll have to pound the pavement and knock on some doors.

Wow so any type of license suspension even failure to pay a fine makes it harder to obtain a trucking job? even if its not a moving violation that the license was suspended for?

Doesn't make it harder to obtain a trucking job, just makes the choices less.

Thanks for the info so far. I will be talking to a lawyer about this too but I just wanted to get some idea about this. Do you think I would be able to get the suspension expunged at all?

Your cdl school will answer this question for you. They check your record before enrolling you to make sure that if you graduate they can issue you a license. A suspension for a fix a tix is nothing and won't affect your future job prospects at all. I highly doubt they won't enroll you for that. I went to school with guys that had multiple duis and once the suspension was lifted they were fine. Don't forget that the trucking industry hires the most Americans without high school diplomas and employs the most ex-felons. They like to seem like they are picky but pretty much any swinging dick with a good eye two arms and two legs gets the job. Notice I didn't mention you had to have a brain, which after you start driving truck you realize you probably don't have when you ask yourself what was I thinking. Yes you will more than likely have to start out with a big company but that's commonplace with all new cdl holders. Don't let negative people stop you from finding out the truth. go pay you silly little fine in cA and make sure everything is above board before you leave then go get a Oregon drivers licence and then go get your cdl. Remember, careful what you wish for!!

Thanks for that, it feels encouraging to know that its at least still possible. Like I mentioned earlier though, i'm also looking into Trades jobs in general. My next choice would be to go into HVAC, but my question is so uncommon and specific that I figured asking it for a job that REALLY involves alot of driving would be the best place to start.

I keep seeing questions related to DUI's lol and other moving violations, but my thing happened just cause a cop got bored, pulled me over and ticketed me for something a mechanic friend actually fixed, its just the #### wiring wasn't good.

As a final follow up, I have begun looking into it and it seems a lot of places just basically don't want you to have points on your record. I have looked it up and my incident did not give me any points. I know its sometimes on a company by company basis, but if anyone here has ever worked in a different trade and might be able to follow up, do you think trades jobs in general would have a problem with a cleared fix it ticket suspension if I technically don't have any points on my license?

Nope go pay your ticket bro.you haven't had a license in four years which means four years of clean driving history, lol.it's actually a good thing. I drove 600000 miles in those four years and did plenty o damage to my license and I'm still out here giving it a go. I'd recommend the trade thing by the way.
