Hi , can anyone help me, I'm an automotive technician by trade and I'm trying to help a friend with a 2004 Volvo vnl with a cummins isx, the main problem he has is his cluster will go dead and then he will lose engine power, I checked codes through his cluster and he had mid 128 sid 231 fmi 19 (data link j1939) and code mid144 sid 230 fmi 15 stored in vecu(idle validation switch) this condition only happens for the matter of seconds and cluster comes back and engine works fine, I've been check the data wiring for faults with no luck, any help would be appreciate

Sounds more like an ignition switch problem, or the wiring at the back of the switch. That is what I would look at first if it was a Freightliner, Volvo's ???
Just a thought! -
Check battery cables. Make sure all the nuts on the battery posts are tight.

i am having simular issues with my 2000 vnl64 660 with d12 motor but not only am i losing my dash but the dash fan motor and the wipers?
-
sounds like relay problems ore wiring problems. usual for Volvo

I too believe it is wiring but it doesn't give u much time to check it, I did notice this morning when it was dark I did lose my exterior light and panel switches backlighting at same time cluster went out, the after market stereo stayed working, I also had the Cummings scan tool on at this time and it lost communications with ECM, I don't have very actuate wiring diagrams to draw a common problem

Found problem to be ECM ground close to battery, it must branch off else where to give cluster and light module a ground, not sure if I was losing wipers and fan motor but would be worth checking this ground on yours

yep, it is ussual problem for volvo, corroded thin wires on batteries
