    Comparing a 7 spring and a 9 spring clutch:
why 2 different set ups and the pro and cons of each.

I like a Solo clutch because when they work properly the clutch feels the same day after day. Yes I am all too familiar with the problems with the early ones. Has Eaton made any improvements on them making it worthwhile to try one again.

I have a Lipe clutch in my parts room that I can use but I’m not sure my old knee would like it.

    I’m open any comments.

Solo are Ok as long as you dont care about longevity. They never outlast a manual adjust and never make it to worn out mark. If you dont want to adjust and hate down time, this may be for you.

If my bet is on longevity and best bang, it's easy pedal-manual adjust all week long and twice on Sunday, as long as you take the time to adjust it correctly when it needs it.

Now do solo clutches not last because everyone floats and seize due to lack of use? Or are they just crap?

My understanding with the Solo is that resetting them from time helps to keep them free and working.

Human nature. If it isn’t a problem there’s no need to check it.

I suppose I would lean toward the 9. More springs and more dampening ability? The 9 spring according to Eaton is a HD version. Never really payed close attention to either version.

IMO there are 2 things that progress a disc to crack and spit dampening springs.

    1. Extended Idling, PTO time/ rapid and repetitive rpm changes under load.
    2. Repetitive harsh engagement or what I like to call light foot.

I can tell you this, some come out looking good still and others are obliterated. Someone's doing something wrong........and it's not the clutch.

Someone else brought this up. Do not remember whom.
If you use a clutch rated for your engine it should be enough. The heavier the clutch the more pedal pressure is required to push it.
My left knee might be better if I did not always buy the heaviest clutch that fit in the hole.

My rule of thumb anymore is manual linkage, manual adjust clutch. Hydraulic controlled clutch gets a solo. I put the 2050 in all, new not reman. Eaton was saying "over clutching" or using 2050 in all was not a good idea, but the HD ECA clutch only has two, the 1850 and 2250.
