my new EATON clutch with 9k on it has developed a slight catch in it. It started dong it a couple of weeks ago but was so infrequent that I couldn't find out what was wrong. Now it does it every time I push the pedal all the way in and then let it out. What is happening is that when the pedal catches, the throwout bearing rocks to the side a bit(this is what my buddy said when he watched as I moved the pedal). When I push the pedal all the way down it will have the catch right before the brake engages and then when I let up on the pedal it will catch right before I hit the free travel. If I only push the clutch in just far enough to get out of gear it will not have the catch. It is not in the pedal linkage because I unhooked that and it still did it, also you can hear something catch inside the bellhousing.
Any ideas what could be causing this? The clutch works fine other than the slight catch. It is adjusted properly and there are no broken spring that I can see or anything laying in the bottom of the bellhousing. Also, the input shaft was replaced with the clutch.

Similar thing happened on my truck a few years ago, I was tearing my hair out to find the cause. Just pump a big heap of grease in the throwout bearing, too bad if it gets on the clutch brake. Fixed my problem, might fix yours.
gunner76 and lots of character Thank this. -
Seen grease keep a clutch bearing together after failure. Talk about luck.
Was also some aerospace grease. -
Not really sure what you're describing. Did they replace/rebushing the cross shaft and release fork when they did the clutch? Wonder if maybe there is some extra slop there.

Look for hard to find grease fittings in side of bellhousing pointing to cross shaft that move throw out bearing an be sure to grease them on both sides of housing or replace them if they wont take grease?

Suspiciously sounds like worn cross shafts, release fork, etc. Heck, there may be an inperfection on the new input shaft from where he dropped it on the floor before he installed it in the tranny.

Once up on a time I took a transmission out again for the fun of it. While rushing through the job one of the clutch fork shafts protruded through the fork and was rubbing on the through out bearing housing. Yes the bolt was through the slot in the shaft but there was enough slop to allow that. Look it that but you may not be able to see it. Those bolts can be loosened through the inspection hole. I would work at that a little before pulling the trans.

thanks guys. I'll try greasing it more and see what happens and if it doesn't work I'll keep looking. I have only greased it once and gave it my usual 4 pumps but maybe that wasn't enough.
