We have a CM871 that was purchased with 440,000 miles and now has approximately 470,000 miles on it. It was using about a gallon of oil every 15,000 miles. Within the last two weeks, roughly 5,500 miles, the driver is having to had a gallon of oil about every 1,500-2,000 miles. Any ideas on what to look at first as the cause of the sudden oil consumption?

The driver says there aren't any leaks that he can see. Nothing on the ground and nothing that he sees on the block or trailing behind. There was no mention of the air dryer. We'll look at it when it comes in.

The truck has an APU, so there's minimal idling with it. I talked to the local Cummins house and they weren't any help. All they said was to bring it in and they'd be glad to look at it.

Driver said the coolant looked clean. My original thought was the rings, but surprised it would be such a quick change as apposed to a gradual change. With this being our first Cummins, and only truck with a DPF, I didn't know if there was a common or known issue with something like this happening.

Check the exhaust manifold where it bolts to the head for any signs of oil leakage from the exhaust port. Valve stem seals pop off their base and ride up the stem allowing oil to leak out the valve. Other than that, you need to have this looked at. You could be looking at worn or broken piston rings, scuffed liners allowing oil up past the rings and the engine is burning it.

We had the driver take the truck straight to the KW dealership to look at this issue and a couple of others. They're telling us that Cummins says 1 gallon of oil every 1500-2000 miles is normal. Really?!

Their tolerances are pretty wide for things like that. No, not really normal. Engines will use some oil, but not 1 gallon that soon. Engines that are over full or low quality oil will burn rather quickly. Is this unit under warranty?

    Same driver or different one?

Same driver something may be wrong.

Different driver or new driver? stealing oil

I had a oil filter come loose on an ISX once and it was of course leaking around the filter.

Big puddle to go by under the truck and all over everything.

There are only a few places the oil can go. Out the pipe or on the ground is a couple quickies. Is the truck smoking?

    Is the EGR still active?
