I see a company state they are looking for teams to tank helium. I know helium is getting scarce and the price of it is up 400% in the past few years, but why are they offering so much ($82K per driver) to haul it? Is is dangerous or is it harmful to the driver more so than say, crude oil which has benzine associated with it? Would be interested to hear from some of you cryo tankers!
Thanks! -
Rockdoctor Thanks this.

And no, it's not dangerous, just getting rarer. Gooberment used to regulate it but they don't anymore and it's being depleted . Supply will be gone in 20yrs if someone doesn't come up with an alternative.
Far as I know A/P controls most of that market...... so hit me with a PM Rock and I'll get to the bottom fast !

Liquid helium teams are needed because most of the helium (in Praxair's case) is located in Kansas, and they go nationwide from there, hauling empties back for refill. Drivers have to stop and take readings from the trailer every 2 hours, as well as complete a roadside inspection. Because it's cryo, it is a time sensitive material and needs to be at the customer ASAP. For a run to the East Coast for example, half of the trip is empty back to Kansas, so it needs to be teams to cover the distance as quickly as possible and still be in compliance with the Praxair safety policies. The yard in East Chicago would go through a trailer of Liquid He every 3-4 days, and that is just one terminal. There is no shortage of work for a good team.
Teams are well compensated - I do know that some are making 70K plus each, but they are going constantly. It's a 24/7/365 operation and they run you that way, too.speedyk and Rockdoctor Thank this. -
