Coasting?

    I drive A peterbilt 386 for a local beer company and while I was on my route today I had to fuel up. Averaged 7.9 mpg. Which I don't think is all that bad. I was wondering if I could get better tho.

    So on my way to the next stop I was on the interstate and a downhill of about 5 miles came up. I put her in neutral and rolled as far as I could. My speed stayed about 73 without using brakes at all.

    My question is, is it okay to do this if I'm under control? I could have thrown it into 10th real quick if needed.

    second question is, I make about 10-20 stops a day and leave the truck running all day. Would it be more fuel efficient to let it run the whole day or cut it off at the stops? (Average 20 minutes a stop but some may vary to up to an hour.)

    Cut the truck off during your stops.

    If you want to get into trouble, keep coasting down hills out of gear. You've been driving less than a year and think you are in total control of that truck?

    Well as for total control lol I felt in control, I knew the road due to traveling it 3 times a day for about 4 months. I guess being out of gear isn't in control tho. So I'm guessing its better to turn the jake off and let it roll in gear rather than taking it out of gear.

    it js not legal to take the truck out of gear and coast like that [so im told] idling can consume up to 3-4 gallons per hour depends on moter and set up

    i run a volvo with the i-shift and the eco roll which does take the tranny out of gear and the truck will coast on down hill runs but is controlled by an engine brake to prevent speeding . i think its a great fuel saving device and use it at every opertunity i can. 7.9 mpg is good but you can remove the idle time to improve this as idling is wasted fuel. also using progressive shifting [using lower rpms] will improve your mpgs. thier are many other factors that affect mpgs such as high speeds ,wind,road conditions and traffic. happy trails

    Not only is it unsafe to coast down a hill it's illegal. Now you think who's going to know. If you get into an accident and it's bad enough to where DOT comes out to inspect your truck you could be in deeper more than you ever wanted. Right away DOT will blame you for the cause. It doesn't matter if you were not at fault. You could be brought up on charges. After the law gets done with you the civil lawyers step in. Here's where they really nail you. You're at cause so you and your company is going to pay for the other people and you might even pay for the one that really caused the accident. All this has happened before and it can happen again. So ask yourself why would you want to chance going to jail and/or being out of truck driving the rest of your life. Sounds extreme but those civil lawyers make good money off the backs of the innocent all the time.

    Let just say that you do know what it means when you say "I'm under control" believe me you are not Here you are going down that easy rider down hill and let just say you are empty OK? and there was a front axle blow out what do you do now young man? Do you really think you can stop it with your tire rim on the asphalt grinding? And let us just say that you can and you know better did you know that your ECM ( Engine Brain ) Records everything? Including but not limited to your shifting habits, engine temp,etc.How will you explain that in court if you had an accident? Unless you are guided by his all mighty you are never ever in control and this is just a drop in the ocean example of what will be in store for you if you decide to knock it out of gear young man your license is your ticket to keep you and YOURS happy and well don't get ####y on us now and as for fuel savings goes it Aint worth it.

    As to weather you shut off the engine while you are Loading/unloading @ the customer Yard ? BIG YES for turning the engine off that is the smart thing to do unless it is 60 Degrees below Zero outside

    Further more the newer trucks today if you cruise without gears you will end up with a bad speedometer readings ( your speedometer will be out of Sync )
