I'm not gonna sit here and pretend I know what I'm talking about, because I don't. I'm a farmer by trade, but part of my job also includes hauling grain two months out of the year. I decided after my second overload ticket that it might be time to install a CB in this truck. Instead of doing research and making an informed purchase, I bought the first thing I saw, which was a Cobra 25. Not sure if its a good radio or not, at this point I'm not satisfied. But it could be something simple that I haven't figured out.

Here's the issue. I have set the radio just as the book explained but it doesn't work as it should. I can only transmit a few hundred yards, but I can hear others talking from several miles away. While driving, the S meter needle bounces back and forth, sometimes entering the red line, all while no one is talking. I'm using dual 4' antennas with the OEM coax. Tried a 3' single with the same results. Everything is properly grounded as near as I know. The antennas are not tuned, haven't had time to get that done. Any suggestions?

Get some help that can put "hands on". Either go to a CB shop, or find somebody like a local trucker, or CB/ham hobbiest that can help. Most are glad to offer assistance. If your only hope is here.....post up some pictures of your set up. Maybe it is something obvious we can help with. If it is a internal problem with the radio, you will have to find a tech to fix it. Oh, by the way. A Cobra 25 is an excellent radio and should do all you need it to do and more. I ran one for years when I hauled grain. Just a heads up, I'd go with one antenna at least 4ft, and a quality, after market coax. There are no short cuts to good performance. Ditch the factory stuff. Being able to hear but not talk could be an SWR problem. I would never attempt to transmit on a radio without first checking the SWR.
