I was recently given a cobra 29 from my father in law to replace my uniden 78. My question is... On my prostar its set up dual mount with stock wire. I put dual 1000 watt everyday 29.99 at a truckstop ant. My drivers side is about 1/2 inch short cause of the adapter.

My range is kinda sucky.. Bout 2 miles and my channel 40 swr on radio meter is right at the crack in the top red line with the arrow at the end of the worf cal. My channel 1 although.. Is only up to the "c" in "cal". Is this cause by mis lenght.. Or stock wire.. Or are both contributing factors?

Sounds like bad coax. The slightly shorter antenna should not have this affect.

I'd agree... an inch or two won't be a problem at CB frequencies... only when the lenght mismatch gets to be around 1/4 wavelength. Bad coax, loose connections would be my guess as well.

Check the connections make sure their tight on the mount studs.(Use Pliers) Also verify it is a true Co-Phase Coax set up.

10-4. I noticed my antenna wasn't quite secured. But even after I tightened that up.. My sw was still the same and range. Ill check my coax. If nothing else.. Ill have a cb shop do everything up right for me.. New coax. New antennas and a peak, tune and connex board too.

Be careful letting a shop set you up...some of them don't have a clue to what their doing.....they just want your money.

Also don't rely on the radio's built in SWR meter, they are not very good. get you an external meter, like a $50 one from Radio Shack.

Either one is a good radio and basically the same. Cobra just has the bigger name for some reason, but they're not really any better than a Uniden. Heck for the longest time the 29's all used Uniden boards.

But then again if I had to pick a back lit model I'd go with the 78 Elite over the 29 Nightwatch ANY day of the week. Because the 29 NW is run by 1 LED/xformer and once it blows out, it's easier to replace the radio. The 78 Elite uses multiple LEDs so if one happens to go out the whole face doesn't go dark.

Wounderful. When I first started truckin a few months ago.. I didn't notice there were two cb hook ups on my prostars mirrors.. And only one antenna.. So I burned something up on my 78.. But I'm actually at a truck stop in albuquerque,nm that has a cb shop.. So I'm tryin to get a deal worked up.. Where I trade my 29, then he fixes my uniden, peaks and tunes and gives me a rk56 mic.
