Thanks for the help. But I think I'm ready to get a better radio. Any suggestions of a good legal radio that can get me out 5-7miles. I already have the perch mount and a Wilson 1000 4ft antenna on the truc, and my own coax cable. Totally bypassing the stock setup..

I love the uniden 880 but you MUST have someone to tune that radio right. Wrong person in that radio and it can turn into a dog or trash. Combine it with a little amp and it's even better. When I say little, about the size of a pack of smokes and 120w output, all runs on your existing wiring for most trucks. They also make a 60w that will run on any truck's wiring.

I'm not sure why you are thinking you need a "better" radio. Isn't that radio the newest Cobra in the 29 line? I haven't had any experience with them, but from what I've read they are pretty decent radios.
I don't think I'd give up on it just yet. If the problem is in the radio and the shop you bought it from won't make it right, Cobra should take care of you, unless the "peak and tune" was a hack job. -
I have the same radio, peaked, tuned, and have a 100w linear built into the rear of it. No problems using the factory power.
What your problems with the cutting out sounds like is for some reason your mic connections are loose.
