This is all very interesting and very accurate. However, the "Ishihara test" (of which this is a variant) cannot be the only test used to determine if a driver can tell red from green, so sayeth the Bureau of Motor Carrier Safety.

I am color blind. Yet I have a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate. I have failed every Ishihara test I have ever taken. I cannot see the numbers you are supposed to be able to see. But I can tell red from green and from amber. And I can tell when the light turns red. For those of you "normal" people, I can "see" red and it looks hot and I can "see" green and it looks like grass. But I cannot tell the difference between the subtle shade differences of the dots in Ishihara tests. I call it shade blindness".

Here is the language of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Part 391 SubPart E Paragraph 391.41
"a driver must have....the ability to recognize the colors of traffic signals and devices showing standard red, green, and amber"

and it don't say anything about the Ishihara test. (There is language in one book I have where it says Ishihara cannot be the only test used)

I have no trouble at all with most labs, who use red and green cards, but bring along M&M's and have used them once and I can sort out and identify all the colors 100% correct as fast as I can move my fingers.

    Interesting.

How odd because I was just wondering the last couple days how a person would know if they were color blind.

I passed all the tests for color normal. There was one that said color normal would see a 57, I saw that clearly and then they said a color deficient person would see a 35. I could faintly see that.

the first time i looked into the machine with the dots the nurse said tell me what number you see - i waited for a number to come on the screen - she got impatient and said well what number do you see - i replied i don't see anything but a bunch of dots - she tried another screen - i said more dots - then she apologized and said she'd never tested anyone who was color blind - i can tell red yellow and green but it seeme like shades and what type of light i am in effects it
