Yeah, I did the road building thing with Lane, too. Having to turn into a job site directly off a freeway was always a pain in the nuts, thanks to the motorists feeling like they had to crowd you every step of the way.
Or maybe I just hate people. I suppose that makes sense.

I am sorry, but that is just flat out untrue.

There are so many factors involved, where you live being one of the biggest issues. Your better quality trucking companies, especially anything involving heavy haul, simply are not going to take the risk and put the time in with a student driver. The juice just isnt worth the squeeze. Experienced drivers are fighting over those jobs in most parts of the country if they are with good quality companies, why would anyone want to hire a student rather than someone with some experience?

Ive heard you telling people that stuff before and its just plain irresponsible because its a fantasy. Just because you caught a unicorn, doesn't mean everyone should bank their future and career on being able to do that.

Larger carriers have training programs set up for recent school graduates because they have to. They need drivers and they understand that schools do not make you professional drivers.

    I caught a unicorn?

No, I busted my ### and proved I was "worth the risk" to teach how to drive. It wasn't just about cost/ benefit, risk-analysis, etc. It was the fact that the owner of the company and his drivers realized it was something I was committed to. That I didn't get into this as just some fall-back because of the recession or because I had nowhere else to turn. It was what I wanted to do, and I showed them I was committed, and that gave them motivation to teach me.

One of the biggest reasons people go to trucking schools? It's the easy answer. People don't like hard answers, people don't like searching for alternative solutions, and people want things spelled out for them. "Oh, I can just cut you a check and in 6 weeks I'll have my CDL? Seems easy enough."

    It's the easy answer.

If what I did meant catching a unicorn, how many unicorns must have been around in years gone by when the way I learned was the way you started in this industry.

Banking your career and future on a 6-week, multi-thousands of dollar course at a trucking school that could really care less about you seems a lot more foolish to me than banking your career and future on learning from veterans who want to teach you. And the multitudes of drivers who get blown over, jackknife on snow and ice, etc. each year because of the 160-hour driving schools you seem so fond of and ready to promote is proof enough to show how little they're really teaching them. They were never taught how to say no, taught when to park the truck because of conditions, and because these trucking schools and mega-fleets create a culture of fear and bullying drivers into doing unsafe things because the driver is worried it's going to show up on their DAC or they'll get a bad report if they choose to switch companies.

23 years old and you have it all figured out huh? So all these other people that have worked their ###e$ off to break into the industry to get a career in trucking are idiots..... You're the only smart one.

You out smarted a multi billion dollar industry and muscled your way through..... You're right, you weren't lucky, you're just better than everyone else.

I am going to AIT in Henderson and would not recommend this school. I'm sure I'll get the CDL and start with Werner but the school is cluster f@&k. They had too many in the class and actually asked if two people would take a two week leave of absence. Also so far in the second week been flat lied to by the staff three times. I should have gone to Sage or even CDL College.

I'm curious about that too since he said he's going with Werner.

Is Werner worse than the other starter companies?
