OK so I looked at a some threads on the subject but I can't find out what I need to know. Here's the question:

Can you use the Comdata card to make online payments and purchases? You know like make your phone or credit card payment, or buy something of e-bay or wherever.

I even went to the Comdata site but they say nothing one way or the other.

The cards are backed by MasterCard, and they are technically a debit card, so they should work. They also supposedly work in ATMs and even at Walmart, and you can use them for cash back with purchases. But I find no hard evidence that anyone uses them for online transactions.

I am probably going to temporarily take a Comdata card until I get some checking account issues ironed out and I need to be able to pay bills in the interim. Has anyone used one online?

No you cannot. Comdata does not have the capability of a check card or credit card except withdrawing your paycheck . About the only thing you can use Comdata for is for purchases authorized by your company. Example fuel, oil, scale ticket, or cash advance. You can also have your paycheck deposited to a Comdata card though, but you cannot pay bills with it

I'm not concerned about the company stuff. I just want to know what is going to happen with my money. Can you use it in an ATM or a Walmart, as has been said in other threads? I don't want to do all my shopping in truck stops. Hell I really don't even want to shop at Walmart, but I'm willing to compromise for a couple of weeks until I get things straightened out.

I suppose I will have to buy one of those rip-off prepaid debit cards to use for a few weeks.

I can't believe this industry still operates in the stone age for things like this. The last three companies I worked for had payroll debit cards for their employees who for whatever reason, could not get a checking account. The cards could be used in retail outlets, ATMs, and for online purchases with no issues. I never had one but I thought they were a great idea if you couldn't get a checking account.

BTW those three companies were not trucking companies.

What's the Comdata transaction fees now? Might be better to just get direct deposit and use a debit card. That's what I do.

Don't make me ban you! :p

I missed that part. I remembered I lost so much money with those freaking fees. :(

Why not just get the cash advance on the comdata card and shop where you want to. one fee (if applicable) and call it a day...

The Comdata card acts like a debit-only card. No Visa/Mastercard logo. ATMs accept it (with their attendant fees). Walmart accepts it, and can get up to $100 cash back with purchase (no fee from Walmart).

    No online payments are possible.

No worries man. I'm just trying to figure out how to best take care of bills while my bank figures out who got into my account. That "who" not being me.

It appears that there is an enterprising convenience store clerk around here somewhere.

Still makes it useless to me, although the one comdata card I see did have a Mastercard logo on the front, just like my credit card does.

Looks like I'm going to have to open another checking account for the time being.
