A community college near me offers a 6 week certificate course for getting a CDL. It costs $2k and I may be able to get financial aid depending on what grants are available (checking into that). It's 270 hours of training, 15% classroom, 85% on the course/road.
On the other hand there is an Alliance Tractor Trailer Training Center near me. I've heard it's around $4,600 (waiting for a call back to get the details). It's a 4 week course with 200hrs. I've heard mixed reviews about the quality of the program. There is also a Sage training center not too far away, I think it's even more.
Other than the cost difference are there any other benefits to going through a community college? For example, and this may sound like a dumb question, but I'm curious if a college program is more widely accepted/respected by the better companies?
I'd really like to find a good company I can stay with for a while and not be pulling my hair out to leave as soon as I get a year in. I've got a clean driving record and a stable work history, so I hope I can find something that pays well and will get me home to my family at decent intervals. The big dream, I know.
Right now I'm looking pretty hard at the college program. It's a big decision, I'll be quitting a job I've been with for seven years to go to school and go out on the road. I've been thinking about this for a long time and put it off for a while due to the economy but it's time for a change. I just want to be sure what's the best way to go and would appreciate some input from those with experience.
Community college program or "independent" school?

Go with the community college man! Especially if your not sure about the other schools, you said you have a clean mvr and all so you should be able to get a job with a pretty decent outfit once you have your cdl!
