Companies running automatic transmissions?

    A constant repeating motion in one direction can be hazardous no matter what. My 2¢ says you can cause harm no matter what you're doing. More power to you if you can claim a transmission on your injury.

    Uh... exactly! Isn't that what I said? The perpetual motion?? Golfers get it, tennis players, IT specialists, etc... and oh yeah, TRUCK DRIVERS!

    As for your snarky "more power to you" comment... When one has no idea what they're saying, or talking about, or have the entire story, they tend to just make an ### of themselves. So for your information, it's not a matter of IF I can claim it... the Doctor already did! I'm already being covered! The perpetual motion, as I said on the 1st post, did NOT cause it, it was what weakened the tendon... thus when I did what I did... it tore the tendon. Why I have to explain this is beyond me. Just do some research for yourself! Geez...some people!! o_O :rolleyes:

    Oh BTW... getting in and out of a cab all day, as your 1st wonderful comment stated... means what? Do you get out EXACTLY the same way each and every time? Do ya not think that that kind of action can be adjusted accordingly? There would be no "perpetual motion" in getting in and out, unless one isn't wise enough to adjust their actions. However, shifting a 13 spd or 18, is not optional, now is it? Same EXACT motions, all day long, and includes physiology that may be above your pay grade!

    OK, if Rerun is a trainer then the question is. Does he teach floating??? Getting ready for school but I was medium/light duty truck tech so shifting isn't a problem for me but, double clutching? Really, why? Beats the hell out of the clutch and in general a big pain in the butt. There isn't a school anywhere around here that teaches what you all do every single day, floating.

    Why is this not taught? Probably be more stick drivers if they were taught to.

    Floating is something you should only do if you know the transmission inside out. That's my opinion anyway. I believe you should know how to skip gears and know what gear to be in at any given speed. Especially city driving. When you float there are sometimes you'll think you're in gear but really you're half way there. When you apply power there's a big bang and that's not good.

    You can be rolling down a major street in high gear and slow down for a red light. When the light changes you go from high gear to maybe 6th or somewhere around there. You don't need to shift down to every gear. Also you can go from high to 6th then stop and you will not be lugging the engine. Of course this is all with a 10 speed. Another reason is most all DMV require you to demonstrate double clutching.

    Yeah, I know, very old post. Rerun's opinion doesn't necessarily carry any more weight than anyone else's, especially compared to those of us veterans that happened to like autoshifts now. Most of us have driven our share of different transmissions: that just means we can shift some gears, and that's only one aspect of driving. The most important component of the truck isn't the transmission, the engine, the tires, brakes, etc: It's a well trained driver that is able to apply knowledge, experience and sound judgement to any given scenario.

    I don’t understand how over the road guys talk about they can’t use a clutch anymore becuase of leg problems from years of driving. After all those years you still using clutch for shifting? Should only have to use the clutch once a day and that’s to get the truck rolling from a stop in first gear to get back out on the freeway. Float the rest of the way. Once you get to your highest gear, you stay there all day. Not my intention to be a wise cracker. Just trying to understand

    Truck driving is as varied an occupation as any out there, not all of us stop once a day and spend the rest of the day on a nice interstate hwy in high gear. Some of us have to make frequent stops, some have to take 2 lane roads a lot, some of us even have to back up every once in awhile..lol

    I spend a lot of time on the backroads looking for farms, or a quarry, or a plant of some kind.. I also spend time cutting across fields on what amounts to a cow path to get to clay pits... And all of our trucks are automated transmissions.. sometimes that's a good thing and other times that's a pain in the you know what... But it's a living and what kind of transmission you have does not determine whether you are a "real" trucker or not. I've been in and out of these trucks since 1981 and I remember times before the hydraulic clutch when that pedal really would wear you out between lights in traffic.. You had to have some leg just to stand on it.. Now there are marshmallow clutches and super synced transmissions that are easy as pie to float.. So I'll keep driving this automatic super 10 and keep the paycheck rolling in every Friday :D

    How many of you drive a automatic personal vehicle? sometimes it's just nicer and easier to drive an automatic. it has nothing to do with how big of balls you have. I feel sorry for you guys who thinks it takes driving a stick to make you feel like a man.
