Hello, I am looking to change my career path into trucking. I have no experience or CDL. I have looked at a few companies. that offer training and OJT. Im looking for long haul type trucking for the money.
So anyways, it looks like there is a few companies out there that will allow dogs and cats but most don't mention Birds. I'm alright with leaving him with a good friend for a few months during training. But I would definitely like to find a good starter company who will allow him(after training) Does anybody know of such a place?
Thank you for your replies!
PS, He is 30 years old, about 8 inches tall, very bombproof and doesn't know nor care to fly and he will be in a small cage while driving. But he is an experienced traveler.
Companies that will allow a small parrot?

If your willing to do flatbed
Give Melton truck lines a call , I'm almost positive they will say yes , and all there trucks have an APU to keep your feathered passenger warm in winter . -
Can't help you with a company, but the co. I'm with there's a team that's had a bird for years, he's/her has a perch on the dash and watches everything. At least your pet/friend won't be leaving piles of poo around truck stops that their "responsible owners" don't pickup. BOL

How does such a bird (Parrot?) do with cold and heat? Can't expect an APU to work perfectly all the time, Arizona summers? North Dakota winters? Things can get real hot/cold real fast. No animal can deal with heat but some are more sensitive then others to longer-term cold.

Good point.
I just know the team I referred to has had their bird for years, but they have an APU and a big sleeper.
Their bird wants for nothing,,,,, just saying. -
I remember the Wylie Sanders recruiter says they allow anything in the trucks pet wise, even have a driver with a snake.
JForce28 Thanks this. -
Kinda got caught up on your bird situation, but I digress.
Look into the cos. you would like to drive for,,, then research their pet policy. That research should narrow down things a bit. -
Your bird aside, look hard and I mean hard into why you want to do the trucking thing. I'm 35 years into this "industry" and I personally would not encourage anyone to pursue this avenue of employment imo. IF, there's any other avenue of employment research that first. I'm - wetblanket

Long haul OTR is fine for a very select few people. But I agree that for most, OTR is going to end in disappointment and misery. Not a matter of if but when and how much they lost before they gave it up for something else or another segment of trucking.
And today, OTR is not necessarily where the better money is. But if you want to see all the scenery this nation has to offer, OTR [with the right outfit] is the only way to go. Do that several years then you can say you've been there, done that, and move on to some other means of trucking. If OTR is in your blood, you'll be back sooner or later.TheFriscoKid and Klleetrucking Thank this.
