I'm in a tough spot. I need 4 more months of OTR experience to get the job I want. The company is unable to bend on the 1 year OTR requirement. I had to leave my last job prematurely because of a situation at home. The situation has been resolved but I want to stay within a days travel from home. I have spoken with several companies and none of them have exactly what I want.
So I feel that my only real options to get the 4 months I need are a lease where I can turn down loads or to find a company with non forced dispatch.
I would prefer the non forced dispatch, but I haven't found a company with that option. I have spoken with several companies that offer "midwest regional" runs and it's the same story. We try to keep drivers in their region, but freight dictates dispatch. I understand this. That is just trucking. I don't want to gamble end up getting a load somewhere I don't want to go a month in and end up quitting. I don't want to mess up my work history or risk a company getting mad that I quit without notice and doing something to my DAC.
The 6 month lease option is a bitter, bitter pill for me to swallow because I go in knowing that I'm going to get the business, but I don't need the money I just need the experience. Running enough miles to break even for 6 months would be fine with me as long as I can stay in the Midwest area. I went ahead and paid my cell phone up 12 months in advance so now I have no monthly fixed expenses will just have to feed myself and that is around 60 bucks a month for me.
I'm looking for recommendations from the community on ways for me to accomplish what I'm trying to do. Any recommendations of decent companies with a short term lease or companies with non forced dispatch would be greatly appreciated. Or if you have a better idea for me to get the experience I need while staying in the area I want please feel free to share.
Companies with a 6 month lease option or non forced dispatch.

Sometimes the words "non-forced dispatch" means "turn down loads alot will get you starved out" which is easy to do with a lease driver.
Keep looking for regional jobs... Maybe Agriculture like hauling grain, milk something like thatTRKRSHONEY Thanks this. -
My advice is to look for local jobs. I'm afraid if you go l/o, you will owe more than the miles you are getting. In other words, you will not get the miles to make the payments and make money. The only companies I can think of are the ltl ones, and local jobs ones. Good luck.

Home time and lease operator is a oxymoron, you may regret it. As others have said local sounds more to your liking.

You have got to stay hooked up to even think about making money in a lease deal.

I'm still getting my CDL so I can't answer your question but did you really say you could feed yourself for sixty bucks a month? I'm interested!?

Find a rent-a-driver company. These companies rent drivers to trucking companies for single trips or by the week, etc. It's not a bad deal for someone in your situation. Driver Solutions is one of those companies, but there are several more. Check the yellow pages, Careerbuilder website, or Google. Sometimes a company will rent-a-driver, looking for someone that may be a good fit for a company that has very low turnover & rarely has to interview or have orientation for just one driver. It's not forced dispatch; the rent-a-driver company will call you and say some company needs a driver for a trip or a few days, etc., do you want the work or not.

If you only need 4 more months of experience to get the job you want, then I would get whatever I could to put my time in. If you want to stay close to home, you could buy your own truck and get your authority. You could then run where and when you want. Your options are much more limited until you get at least 1-2 years of experience.

I think Knight is not force dispatched.

Op said he needs otr experience. Local driving will probably not meet that requirement.
