Thank you for posting the guidance.

The following is derogatory toward whatever agency is stupid enough to post that guidance, Not pointed at @not4hire
For me what matters is what the driver says. The driver has the option to go on-duty if the company interrupts the drivers rest break. If more drivers would stand up to companies/employers and say no we would not have this discussion.

I have no respect for the guidance sited. It is moronic and should be repealed.

    ________________________________________________________

A driver should be communicating that they are shutting down, Location, and confirm or update ETA. In the would be nice category is to communicate when the driver will start rolling again. Quick computer message to dispatch/Night crew should take care of things. If a driver does this when they shut down every night there should be no need for phone calls unless plans change. Changed plans should be communicated electronically with a phone call only if it's an emergency.

It has only taken going on-duty one time to stop the harassment phone calls at places I've worked at. I just tell them to hold on, change to on duty. Then I let them say their piece then let them know immediately what my updated ETA is. I will also send the updated ETA in a Qualcom/Peoplenet message including why the ETA has changed. I typically also asked about the option of swapping the load to a team truck. After communicating the issues/schedule I return to off-duty and restart my break.

Only trouble with that, is that family members will be unable to reach you in a REAL emergency. Unless you carry a separate phone for friends and family.

I actually had a dispatcher irritate me so bad on home time, I did exactly that. Had two numbers and the only one the dispatcher had, stayed in the truck on home time.

Something else I did... I do some pretty good voice impressions... One of them Buford T. Justice. Awhile back, I set my voicemail greeting to this in my best Sheriff Justice voice...

"Hold up on that phone call, gen'amen...
Now... there might be some telemarketers...
    who wanna... SELL something...
    So you folks just...
Leave a message, with a phone number...
    And don't go home...
    And don't go to eat...
    And don't... PLAY wit' yaself...
It wouldn't sound... NICE, on my voicemail...
Oh, you can... THINK about it...
    But DONNNN'T do it.....
    You SOMB*TCH!"

Before I got THAT idea, I used an online text-to-speech synthesizer to impersonate an East Indian woman announcing the services of Dammitman Janitorial, saying that "we are unable to answer your call... Please leave a message and we will tend to your matter appropriately."

Fooled a lot of people too, on both counts.
