If I go through a company sponsored cdl training program, is it true that the carrier that provides the training is usually the only company that will accept drivers that were trained through the program? For example if I went through Swift's training, would other companies consider Swift's program as a recognized school? I spoke with a cdl school rep who stated this was "the case," but I smelled a rat. I should know better from reading this forum, and I would say this is pure nonsense.
Company CDL schools Recognized by Other Carriers?

It is an interesting question. Not sure a whole lot of folks have been thru company sponsored training and went directly to another company without atleast testing the waters with the training company.

Well I'll tell you this.....back in 08 when the drivers for swift rearended a school bus in Tennessee and they found out that there were two brothers using one cdl and one was an illegal.....all the people that went to that school had the licenses suspended by the DOT. One of those happened to be a GOOD driver at Celadon....she was told to park her truck and clean it out on the spot,,,,then she got dinged for abandonment. Go to a company sponsored school at your own risk , if you don't plan on staying there then they are going to rake you over the coals for the $

I wasn't clear with my question. If I go (for example only) to Swift's company school and when/if I leave a year or so later to drive for another company, would most companies consider Swifts training program as a recognized school for obtaining a cdl?
-
Um, that would be a yes.

If you have a cdl you have a cdl.....some companies may look at bit harder on you as you came from swift others won't bat an eye...it's all in how you pass your road test with your new company and how strict they are
Buckeye 'bedder Thanks this. -
You stay for a year after training, and it won't matter where you got the license. What will matter is your record on the license. Tickets, accidents, log violations, all that fun stuff. Once you're experienced, carriers couldn't care if you got your license out of a Cracker Jacks box (I honestly think some drivers do). Experience, especially recent experience, is the key.
